| | | I was wondering if anyone knew of any UE places in or around the outer banks of north carolina. I know of the one abandoned lifeguard station on pea island, but i was wondering if there were more abandoned places?

| | | In one of these old places, if it still stands, lives, in the attic, is an old vinyl LP of my brother's. It's called Wonderwall Music, and is quite valuable, mostly for the musical content. If you've ever hankered to hear country music played on a sitar, it's on there. Let me know if you stumble across a box of albums which has that in it, as I'm very interested in getting it back. My brother lived there for a time in the 80's, BTW. The other albums are of interest as well, as I only listen to vinyl nowadays.
Cheers, and thanks in advance.

| | | try other sites. esp. site where people listed that such and such a place is haunted. most abandoned sites get a "haunted" reputation by local kids. http://theshadowla.../northcarolina.htm http://anc.funkybuu.net/locations.html mabey this should be moved to the midatlantic sub-forum

yeah i liked that since the building was getting swallowed in sand, it made getting on the roof real easy. plus the view was pretty nice. [last edit 12/9/2005 7:20 PM by thesound0fchaos - edited 1 times]

| | | Kind of a tourist trap-ish, but the outer banks has Jockey's Ridge, which is cool in itself, but there are whole buildings that have beeen swallowed up by the sand. I used to live there and there are also a lot of houses on the oceanfront which have been condemned, they are fun to chill in, spend the weekend in, whatever if you're in the area. It's a cheap place to stay. Another place is the Whalehead club in Duck. Research it, it's pretty cool. I think they've renovated it since I lived there though. You have the lighthouse, and pretty much any resort with a gateguard means you can shower, use the pool, etc. if you're good with people, esp. in the winter.
I had nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion. |

| | | There are a few places down here, but things can sometimes be tricky with the PO LICE. Currituck is perhaps a bit better, ans is some of the surrounding counties like Tyrell (Columbia NC), Hyde (ocracoke and Swan Quarter). On the beach itself, most of the old places have been torn down or are still used. For someone like me who IS interested in UE this place sucks.

| | | Wow, I didnt know others hiked the outerbanks. I hiked a spot up by Sandbridge VA with is the start of the whole island section. (This is hiking towards the north carolina border). A long time ago ships used to crash ashore at this point and the wrecks used to litter the dunes. If you hike right after a storm the ribs of old ships poke out though the dunes like massive hulking masses for about a week,..then the dunes swallow em back up. Back in the early 1800's so many ships used to crash out on this point a community was started called "Wash Woods". It lasted until exactly the 1930's. Most of the housing was made out of the ships that ran ashore. Most noted is the church, only this spire is left but its black cypress and rare hardwood. This still exsists today along with a graveyard. Most of the tombstones are children. living in this place was not easy. Flash floods and poor soil pushed alot of people out and killed a good many also. There are many other places still left along with tons of old relics and half buried houses. These places I have decided to keep to myself,...i can tell you though if you decide to hike this area look out for a house sized bouye and horses. The people of Wash woods left behind horses and pigs which now have become ferral. Horses are nice,...the pigs will chew you up. do not even go near them. And when you hike, carry a big stick just incase. If any one is really interested drop me a note, this place is filled with secrets, just dont trash it or take shit. i have plenty of maps and waypoints. Good-luck

| | | Forgot to mention,.. This area is a whole strech of nothing for close to 40 miles. Not a tourist trap but hard history buried in the sand. Bring lots of water and plan on hiking most of the day. The best place to start is though Sandbridge in virginia beach driving down to the end.

| | | Its on the VA side but you can also get to it from the NC border. You can look it up. The lost village was called Wash Woods. Its located in the Back Bay Wildlife refuge. I prefer the VA side because the hike is sweet and the landscape is very interesting.

Yes, they moved the Coast Guard station across to the north side of the inlet due to the inlets shifting. That land is now owned by the state of NC and they have been debating for years what to do with it. It had been a tossup for awhile for either the Gov's shore home, or the NC coastal Studies institute.
