I was wondering if anyone has been to Pleasure Beach in the last year or two or knows if anything has changed there recently.

If not, its very much worth checking out and very easy to find. Some of the houses that look abandoned are not, so be careful. Don't miss the theatre if its still there, there are props and costumes, lighting equipment and more...

Here are some pictures I took on Pleasure Beach, at least 3 years ago:

Dude, I went to bridgeport two weeks ago, there are abandoned buildings every 200 feet throughout the entire city, it's crazy. If you get to the Moon Cave say hello to Moon Man for me.

The world is not nearly as scary as the TV makes it out to be.

I think it was, before the bridge burned down.

i went to pleasure beach about a year ago, not much had changed since i was there about a year before that.

people are still living out there and i hear they don't hesitate to call the cops (not sure how the cops would get out there, police boats?)

also, be careful of the hilarious sign that warns the island is monitored by webcams.

For some reason I felt completely safe wandering Pleasure Beach alone...whereas I wouldn't be so keep about wandering B-port alone, as much as there is to see.

Are the people who live there squatters or are they still the same homeowners. Last time I went, no one batted an eye that I was there. Hearing a lone radio on what I thought was a deserted area was sort of eerie.

Lou, next time you decide you want to hit B-port, hit me up. It's far closer to me than say...I don't know, Metro?

A resident called the cops on us once. About an hour or two later when we went back to the car, the cop was sitting there in his car waiting for us. All he told us was to stay away from people's houses when we are out there!

Without the bridge, its much more like you are in Stratford then Bridgeport. I think when the bridge was there I would have been scarred to death of the place.

The people who live there, are mostly homeowners. I read an article in the CT POST back in 2000-ish that the city was trying to figure out a way to push them out, but couldn't.

Has anyone actually interacted with the inhabitants of Pleasure Beach? I think I'm going to try this weekend. I mean, I know they must be a little weird to live so ostrisized from society, but they can't be that bad... right? I feel like they'll either be really friendly/lonely/talkative, or ready to chop me up into bite-sized pieces and throw my bones in the river... I don't know, what do you think?

When we walked along the residential street, a really cranky guy who could have easily been 80 came out of his house and yelled at us, that people live here and stay away. That was when the cops were called on us.

Of course, I'm sure that someone out there must be friendly. I would guess that the nicer people though are probably the ones that only come during the summer instead of living there year round!

Pleasure beach looks almost 100% abandoned. I was there the yesterday twice! Didnt see any signs of people on the island other than 1 boat docked. When i returned at night i noticed TONS of alarms on the houses. So if the house isnt clearly abandoned i wouldnt touch it. Other than that, im sure if ur quite and in a small group you shouldnt have any problems with residents (if any are there). One thing id like to know is why people left all their belongings. Some of the houses are like someone walked in told the family to get up and get out. Very strange. Maybe has something to do with the bridge being out? Anyone have any clue?

According to this article: "residents were evicted in 1997. Some refused to leave and some unsuccesfully sued the town, but now in 2003 almost all of the dwellings are abandoned and being taken over by nature."

When I was there and ran into a resident, that must have been sometime between 1997 and 2003. If you still see belongings, I'm guessing that's because it would be such a pain in the ass haul them away! Without a boat, you'd have to cary everything by hand. The Polkadot Playhouse still had a lot of props and costumes when I was there even though it had closed long before.

I looked this up and here's a fantastic link on exactly what happened there and the way it is now.

I was at PB last month. Cool spot, still worth visiting, but try to avoid the actual beach - critical endangered species habitat (piping plovers). There's still lots of people living in the houses on the neck that connects to stratford. it's fairly seasonal out there and the only access is through boats, but they're still active despite the city's desperate desire to have them gone. You have to have some sympathy - although the city owns the land a lot of the residents have had these houses in the family for 50 years or more. Exploring the houses is more vandalism that UE i think.

on the other side of the fence, though, the amusement park still has some cool stuff to see. I didn't see the theatre but the remnants of the carousel are cool and there's a great dock to hang out on. a boatload of people happily speaking spanish and drinking lots of coronas stopped in for a picnic and some fishing while we were there, it was cool. the burned bridge looks amazing. there's probably some stuff we didn't see too, since it was getting dark and we decided to try to get back to the car before sunset.

this is some vintage information - maybe true before the bridge burned but there's not any way out there now except a very circuitous route from stratford, or by boat. maritime hookers perhaps? a new kind of 'merchant marine'?

I was there in the spring and heard a TV or radio on inside a house as I walked by, was there a year ago and saw what appeared to be a resident, and went a week or so ago and watched someone run out of a house and stop to stare at us, so there are definitely people living there. If the article(s) say they were evicted, I guess they aren't staying legally. There is still power out there though, which makes me a little confused. Electrical companies can be lazy about shutting off power, but after 9 years of eviction?

the streetlights out there even have power, so obviously someone is supplying it to the place.

someone is maintaining the "abandoned" houses as well since ones that were previously wide opened are now boarded up (although usually in ghetto fashion)
