things around here
entry by The Hitman's Daughter
7/5/2005 5:52 PM

Yeah I've been logging on here a lot less lately.

Sometimes I feel like this site, and this whole "hobby", has evolved into something I no longer feel like I'm a part of. It's nobody's fault. It's not Av, it's not all the new people here, it's not the people trying to hock Urban ExplorationTM books and Urban ExplorationTM movies and Urban ExplorationTM clothing.

It's just the way things go.

I still love exploring.
I still appreciate the beauty of rusty forgotten buildings.

I just don't feel like having it so in-my-face and structured anymore.
I don't like having so many rules and politics placed on something I've been doing since I was a child, by myself, completely unaware of any sort of underground community of people who were doing the same thing I was doing.

I don't like how dry and technical and political and unexciting Urban ExplorationTM has become to me.

Part of me wonders if I'm just being a snob, and an elitist, when I log on here and I'm irked by screen names like 'LiTTleBaByDoLLexpLorerGirl4U' and 'Super LEET Urban Explorer Guy Number 76600312'.
Part of me wonders if I'm just being a snob, and an elitist, when I feel like vomiting at the thought of mass produced Urban ExplorationTM merchandise.
Part of me wonders if I'm just being a snob, and an elitist, when I roll my eyes at the same recycled ideas every new person who joins this community throws up on the board ("ever thought of making Urban ExplorationTM ID cards?" "hey I have an idea lets make Urban ExplorationTM ID cards" "Oh hey I can make and sell some Urban ExplorationTM ID cards - who's buying?" "What would really be cool is if we all had Urban ExplorationTM ID cards!" )

I'm not saying I don't like the site anymore, or UE anymore.
I'm just saying...

You're not being a snob. You're right. "UEing" is the hip thing to do now. It's a fad. Doesn't mean you have to stop enjoying it. You just have to disassociate from the online scene a little more and focus more on how enjoyable it is for yourself. Not stupid posers online.

The following sentence is false. The preceding sentence is true.

I agree completely. Online exploring communities are good for meeting up and exploring with other people. That's really all I use it for now. I don't post much anymore, and I only drop by on occasion to see what's new.

Anyways, I hope to meet more people on this forum in real life through various meet-ups and the like.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.

I totally agree, Although I do like having discussions with the people here, I find it disgusting that UE has become the hip thing to do.
