Finally!
entry by Gatsby
5/24/2005 1:46 AM

There was a certain structure that I'd been wanting to explore for a long time, but for some reason, even though I knew a way in, hadn't done so yet. :/
Asylunt sent me a teaser PM on Saturday with the indication of a new infiltration. He didn't tell me exactly what it was, but offered a picture, knowing that I'd recognize it. YAAAA! I instantly sent him a return message saying that I was going there that night. He gave me a vague tip, as it wouldn't be a true exploration with complete knowledge of how to get in.
I scouted it out shortly after sundown, and found a way in. I called ETMJ and asked if he'd like to join, which, of course, he did. Adam_Zelotes was scheduled to explore with me that night, and hadn't as of yet heard the good news. I called him next and told him what we'd be exploring - of course, the excitement was shared by all of us.

12:30am: We met in front of one of the main buildings and made our way to the proposed entrance.
The way in was extremely difficult. It involved LOTS of hard climbing.
When we finally got up to a point that we couldn't have seen from the ground, we felt like our exploration had begun. We were very high at this point, and ETMJ's well-known fear of heights was peaking. Looking even further up, we noticed a window half open, and there was a ladder to boot!
Making our way inside as quickly as we could with our gear, Adam swung his head around to see a cop car driving up to the area that we had started our climb. We deftly finished our business of entering and began monitoring the cop's activities. He was shining his spotlight around the area. Soon, he drove off, but tensions were higher for the remainder of the night because of that.

Shaking off the adrenaline rush, we began to relax and found ourselves in a room which was well lit, and full of interesting features. Of course, all 3 of us being photographers, we pulled out our equipment and started shooting. The whole complex, in fact, was well lit. It added something - I don't know exactly what - but I think it was good.
Adam said that he needed to be out by 4:30, so we decided to go for the best part - the top! On our way, we were startled a few times by strange sounds emanating from deep within. Listening closely, we could tell it was most likely pigeons. There were more and more as we climbed higher and higher. On the top floor of the first building, there was an especially ornary one. I got a pretty good shot of it flying over the top of the stairway while ETMJ worked to remove the roof access hatch.
It is most safe to say that I have never seen a rooftop with such a gorgeous view, and likely never will. There were no words spoken for the first few minutes, just expressions of wonder.
It was extremely windy, though, and I'm afraid my photos are gonna be kinda shaky looking. The experience won't be the same on film anyway.
Descending back down, we set up our cameras in an interesting room and sort of spontaneously began taking humorous self portraits. It's hard to make it funny on here, but we tried challenging ourselves with getting to certain positions in the room after hitting the 10 second self timer. ETMJ hit the button once and ran around a pole to start climbing up a ladder when he slipped and hit his shin. Trying to climb still, he slipped again and simply turned around and flicked off the camera as it snapped the picture. We were laughing so hard. Lots of funny things like that happened. After we had conquered another roof, which, by the way, was at least as beautiful as the other, Adam and I retreated back down to the top floor and waited for ETMJ to join us. After a few minutes, Adam hushed me and whispered, "There's someone in the stairwell." I followed his wise actions of quickly hiding our equipment and ourselves behind some machinery. As our breathing became heavier, I wondered how the hell we were going to relay this information to ETMJ before he came down into the hands of security. We heard someone enter the room! I peaked around the corner to see ETMJ walking toward us with a huge smile on his face, an indication of a deliberate action to scare the shit out of us. It was one of the highlights of the night! We both totally thought we were busted!

4:30 Exit time. We found our way into the oldest and most historically significant building to, unfortunately, find a way out. We'll have to go back to explore the rest of this place - it's massive! As we made our way down a stairway, we spotted an EXIT sign above a door on the ground floor. While approaching, ETMJ pointed to something above the door. Motion detector! Since we knew we had set it off, we made a quick exit, barely even saying goodbye as we jumped in our vehicles and made our way home.

At one point during the evening, I remarked, "This is a great night." ETMJ quickly corrected me with, "It's a perfect night."
