What a freakin waste of a night
entry by Gatsby
5/21/2005 4:37 AM

Alright, last weekend I joined up with long-time exploring friend BlackHole and D_Wrex with the sure and solid intention of re-infiltrating a revered local tunnel system.
We planned it out perfectly after evaluating the combined knowledge of our individual experiences and were 100 percent sure we would get in. However, when we arrived, we noticed that there was a surveillance camera set up that definitely was NOT there last time. It just happened to be aimed in the precise direction of our entry point. SON OF A! We didn't want to give up that easily, so we hunkered down and discussed alternatives. "OK, we'll return with my video camera equipped with an infrared beam, look through it in the direction of the security camera for a quick moment to determine if it's also infrared. If it is, we're screwed. If not, we'll dress in camouflage and sneak in."

As of this writing, we've not gone back to try this yet.

At that moment, however, we had to come up with another mission to fill in the evening's schedule. No explorer likes to go home with that awful feeling of failure.
BlackHole remembered a couple of abandoned buildings that he noticed while driving around the north side of St. Paul.
When we arrived at the first location, we discovered that it'd been torn down already. On to plan C.
The next building, we found, was still intact and definitely still unoccupied. Finding a parking spot proved difficult - we ended up walking through Burlington Northern property, which is always fun in itself!
Walking up to the structure, we realized that it was a former train station - not for passengers, but for some kind of cargo loading/unloading thingy. Our excitement peaked at this time, because we were finally gonna get some exploring in! We began with the obvious, checking all doors and windows (which were all found to be boarded), then double-checking. Nothing. "Hey, look!", shouted D, who spotted a ladder leading to the roof. We scrambled up in a flash, only to see nothing but a plain roof with a couple of small pipe vents.
D_Wrex stated at one point that the condition of the roof exceeded even the worst of roofs that he'd been on. BlackHole and I agreed and nodded in the direction of the ladder. "Let's go." Right after we said that, a train came cruising around the corner and startled us right into staggering imbalance. We almost fell off and/or through the roof while struggling to find a way to hide our presence from the train guy.
After descending from that hell, we began to have unethical thoughts. Phrases like "Let's just kick a door in" and "We could easily smash that boarded window with this crate" were uttered.
Slapping ourselves back into post-teenage rebellion years mode, we pretty much went home feeling terrible and depressed.

What a freakin waste of a night.
