Infiltration of Fort Knox
entry by Gatsby

There is a cocky theater on the edge of Minneapolis which has been laughing at explorers for way too long. On saturday night, D_Wrex, GreyKat, Jadenala and I gave it a good spanking and sent it to bed without supper.

On a scouting mission a couple of months ago, D_Wrex dubbed the building "Fort Knox", for it was seemingly impossible to get in without planting a bomb at the base. We were on the verge of letting it slip through our hands after checking nearly every possibility.

Saturday, I joined GreyKat and Jadenala with the intention of exploring something new. We came up with a couple of ideas, and then I remembered Fort Knox. I asked GreyKat if he'd mind driving over there so we could at least say we tried everything - just to make it slightly easier to think about how we never got to explore it.
When we arrived, we found the area somewhat busy, as it was still fairly early. We first walked around the perimeter so I could point out the potential entry points that D_Wrex and myself had previously discovered. Everything still seemed to resemble an impenetrable fortress. We decided to check one last area that D & I hadn't thoroughly examined. What is the chance that this one last section would yield access? Very slim, indeed.
I wish I could describe the process to you, but I'll just say that it was extremely risky and potentially dangerous. The moment I realized that we were able to gain access to the interior, I called D_Wrex to tell him about it. His wife Kate is awesome. She reportedly said to him, "You know you want to do it. Go!" So we waited to explore until D could drive into town and join us. I'm glad we did - I would've felt really bad doing it without the guy who did the most scouting.
Once inside, the first thing we found was one of the theater auditoriums (there were apparently three). The seats had all been removed, so we were a little disappointed in that. This room was about the size of one of the theaters at Lagoon. The second theater was almost exactly the same. The projection rooms were also empty. The whole building was SOOOOO dark! It was extremely quiet too, due to the great acoustical devices everywhere on the walls. When we came to the main theater, we were very pleased to find that it was MUCH larger than the other two. The ceilings were three times as high, and the general area was at least twice as big. The seats were gone in this room, too.
Suddenly, D_Wrex gasped as he pointed at something on the floor - a giant pentagram was painted in black spray paint! It was about 10 feet across. Jadenala then noticed a pile of stuff in the middle of the room that appeared to be remnants of a sacrificial fire. In front of the stage, GreyKat found a wooden table with a black tablecloth. Behind it, there was an obscene message written in large letters on the stage. Something about death. This was a creepy scene, to say the least.
We began to think about how these people were able to get in so easily, or so it seemed. The whole place was actually pretty trashed, and there were dead pigeons everywhere. No live ones! We came to the conclusion that there must have been a period immediately after this place closed down when it was easier to get in. That was when it was trashed and pigeons lived within. Eventually, the authorities took measures and had it boarded up securely. The pigeons became locked in a trap to die. Some, perhaps, experimented with cannibalism.
We eventually found our way to the basement. It was by far the largest and most spacious basement I'd ever seen. We found a gated area where they kept the letters that they used on the sign outside, and also found tons of 3-D glasses! There were many different passageways down there. Lots of vents and shelves and whatnot. Very dusty, though. Lots of dirt-boogers later on.
The last place we found was the lobby back upstairs. This was probably the best-preserved area. As you probably saw from D's picture, the chandeliers were beautifully crafted in the classic 50's lounge style. Actually, this whole room, including the bathrooms, was totally lounge! There was a fireplace and a large concessions area. Unfortunately, the toilets were all FULL of poop, apparently from the free access days.
We took out our cameras and did another walk through to get it all on film. In the main theater, we did some rave shots. This involves holding open the shutter while everyone runs wildly about the room, twirling headlamps and writing strange messages in the air with lights. Making interesting patterns can enhance a surreal image like this. During one of these shots, I was running through the dark theater whipping my light around in a circle, and I tripped on something and fell flat on my face! My headlamp shattered and flew into a number of directions. I can't wait to see what kind of light pattern THAT will make!
Well, we had been in there for about 4 hours by this time, so we took off. As I mentioned earlier, the entrance/exit is extremely risky, so we still had an adventure ahead of us.
Fortunately, we made it out without getting arrested. What an awesome night!
D thanked us for calling him and including him on the night's activities.
No problem, man!
