I hate instant messager thingies.
entry by The Hitman's Daughter

i seem to be the only human being on planet earth who doesn't enjoy logging onto their computer and having fifty people you barely even know that well pop up into your face and go "what's up?", thereby forcing you to engage in half an hour of "e-small-talk" when all you really wanted to do was check the weather forecast. A typical MSN/AIM conversation follows:

: hey
: hey
: whatz up
: nm. u?
: nm here.
: cool.
: yeah.
: so..
: brb. smoke.
: k.
: back.
: hey.
: so whatz up.
: nm. u?
: just chillin. eating food.
: me 2.
: cool.

Maybe my problem is that I hate small talk in general. I will avoid saying hello to people I used to go to school with when I see them on the street, because frankly i don't feel like plastering a big fake so-happy-to-see-you smile on my face, nor do i care what they're doing with themselves right now, and I'm sure they don't care to hear about my life either. I will leave the office during my lunch break simply to avoid lunch-room small talk with the laywers I work with. I'm no good at small talk. You end up having to chat at length about things like lactose intolerance, the rain, and the yucky taste of envelope glue, with the intensity and passion of someone who actually gives a crap. I'm no good at that. So I avoid the situation altogether.

I uninstalled all instant messager programs from my computer about a week after using them, because i found that i just had myself on "away" mode the whole time simply to avoid the cacauphony of internet-acquainences. To me, it's the internet equivelent of opening the front door of your house to be met by every single person you know in the world standing on your front lawn. Your friends. The mailman. Your aunt. The guy who bags your groceries. Someone you passed on the street yesterday. All wanting your undivided attention so they can say "watz up". It's just too much. Too much for me.

Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door.

Hmmm it's all in the image I beleive. When I want something from people I usually just start asking my question, when I want to do smalltalk I usually just say "how are you" or "where are you" (lots of my friends travel a lot).

When I'm not into smalltalk I just don't respond until people have asked an actual question. People know me to have My IM on almost 24/7 but I just respond when I feel like it (or I don't).

You don't have to be nice to people.

Ow, and the best thing of MSN? "block" people. I just remove everyone who has not talked to me in 3 months from my list an I block everyone who has never said a sensible thing to me.

Tijmen

P.S. I saw this image on the net and immediately had to think of you... Maybe idea for a new avatar?
