The abandoned road was actually in Metchosin, but I'd be interested to hear where the Colwood one is! (I love old highways/roads!)

I sort of use the name Langford to cover Colwood and Metchosin area nearest Victoria. Sloppy geography on my part. One of the roads you posted, in color, looks like another long abandoned stretch that is quite a ways from Metchosin.

Head north up the 'hat a bit...

Agreed, old roads make me squirrely lol.

Mod to add: Great old ads Mike. That round about where the restaurant was was amazing. There was a huge sign BA, British American? a gas station. That intersection is the slowest and longest in all of Victoria to get through. And now traffic circles are 'coming back', as it's realized how efficient and brilliant they are. Many countries have used them for ever. Love that old Scenic Cruiser bus too.

Douglas and Hillside? The biggest engineering clusterfuck on the island?

The drive in was where Victoria Volvo now stands.

I'm guessing these adds are anywhere in the Sept 18 1957 - March 21 1965.

That's when the CKDA radio call sign was on that frequency, at that wattage.

Cool find MikeJPC

PS. I got that info from here.. http://www3.telus....iomuseum/home.html

The old timers of radio are alive and well in telus land. They have an amateur radio club, with a few VHF/UHF repeaters, as does the CBC.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

I to miss the dayliner. I ALWAYS rode in the rear end cab. I miss that. It's allowed if you ask nice! Or...was. It saddened me to see the rail bridge gone today, and the tracks being ripped up on either side. It felt like a part of my memories were being torn right from the earth. Imma walk from the station by my house here by the Malahat to downtown Vic when I have a free day soon. The Province of BC entered the Dominion based on a "functioning island railway in perpetuity". I'm not holding my breath with the dirt bags in power over in Ottawa.

The ending of that article has me more than a little sad. The over-focus on freight is what killed passenger rail in Western Canada, and why our single passenger rail line passes through uninhabited wasteland for the vast majority of its BC stretch.

I would much prefer being able to hop on a train to the Okanogan or Interior, instead of being forced to take a cramped, overpriced and dilapidated Greyhound.

Yep, I remember that place, a funny contrast to the mostly British theme shops. And don't forget Tunnel News. Still have the first edition of American Photographer Magazine, bought there whatever year that was. Wish I never sold my Nikkormat EL bought on Yates Street from Just Right Photos around the same time.

Some who have followed this thread may find this project, (now starting up again after sitting for several years), interesting. I wonder why they are (so far) keeping the old facade on Pandora? Maybe they will try a facadism thing like the old Sussex Hotel. The digging has just begun. If there are tunnels, they will be discovered...

Okay I read it. Steeped in tradition... they are keeping the old facade, at least so far.

The developer who just bought it posted these pictures over on the vibrant victoria forum (and there are murmurings of a tour in the works) interesting to finally see what her insides look like after fantasizing for so long...

Pretty much exactly what I have (image-wise) on my HD. The top shot with the fire buckets is a near duplicate of what I have. Those buckets haven't been touched.

I'm pleased to see that this magnificent building will get some new life.

This is kind of cool, you can zoom right in on the Janion Hotel. I think it's from 1947?

Nice link, one of the other photos on the site shows the entrance to one of Victoria's nicest drains, though the entrance seems to have shifted since the photo was taken.

You can see the change in the drain itself- entering into tubular cement and continuing on to the oval brickwork, which marks the old outflow in the photo.

Dunno if its technically Victoria, and its just BS folklore (or is it...), but given the earlier discussion of hidden underground satanist tunnels I thought I'd throw up an excerpt from the wikipedia page for Leechtown. Sadly, the tunnel is not rumored to be used by satanists, but apparently it's filled with gold...?

'Local legends report that a tunnel exists in Leechtown that has been chiseled out of the rock, with multiple galleries. The Colonist newspaper planned to fund an expedition in search of the lost tunnel in 1959, but the only person with knowledge of its location, Ed Mullard, died before the search could take place.'

Seems kind of humorously fitting given the earlier flame war-...er...'conversations' about hidden tunnels (not an attack against the current posting members, just that one guy with the south park avatar/picture thing who would NOT stop trolling.)

Just a tidbit of local lore I found sort of interesting, take it as you will.

I know you can't believe everything you read, but one article I was reading on that particular story talked about a cannon from a ship being found in that area, Spanish in origin.

That's pretty interesting, it does sound feasible seeing as how (if I recall Socials 9 class properly) the Spanish did try and make land claims/settle this area and Alaska, using whatever the hell that bit of water between VanIsl and the mainland is called (I should really know what thats called) to run cargo vessels. Pretty sure that dated back to the pre-colonization of the Oregon/Washington/Lower BC regions.
