Sports Weekend? Don't ask, don't yell DND. I'm dyn0mite, watch me explode/launch my ordinance, I'm DND... Okay, no offense and big respect to those in the Services.

Srysly, I saw a map online a few years ago that showed an old tunnel on the base. The description said it was blocked off but used for storage. I've had no luck finding that link again.

"There's a tunnel that goes from (supposedly) Albert Head to Flemming Beach, but it's a military base and I don't think they'll let you in (it's closed on the Esquimalt side, and 14 years ago when we went exploring it was open on the Albert Head side with nothing but some old barb wire in front of the entrance). We only made it about 30 meters into the tunnel before we got caught and chased out (we were in cadets having a sports weekend on the base)."

"Don't think they'll let you in" Bring cookies and aks nicely, hey you never know...

Albert Head, Prince Albert in a can, sorry I can't help hearing Beavis and Butthead voices upon hearing those names.

"There's a tunnel

Honest to Christ, sometimes I think you've gone completely insane. We should probably get together sometime to discuss this opinion over pints. Maybe drag young Peterman out as well.

Speaking of whom, didn't he post a glorious account of an evening spent lurking 50 feet under solid bedrock...you should know as you were there...through a long stretch of blown out granite. Long planning sessions. I believe there was a gas meter. Tanuki lifted a heavy iron something-or-other with his index finger. Team Leader was antagonizing Our Fearless Leader, until I told him to stfu. And who was that nice Aussie fellow. Dsankt, yes? Anyhoo...I can't remember the page where Peterman made the post, and, frankly, I don't want to trudge through 163+ pages of the UTGC thread/spectacle again.

Oh...I watched the doc with a friend today. Haven't seen it for a couple of years. I'm still amazed that we were able to accomplish what we did.

Pretty sure I had a similar adventure with JP, Amadeus, Matthias, and Soren. The Khan do it... (See what I did there? See what I did?)

"...their reasons for undertaking something so dangerous as this are obviously still unclear..."

...to the general public, not to the police.

"Hello!? Yes, 911!? Oh my word! I just saw two young men open a manhole cover and climb inside and close the cover after themselves. I woke up Henry, but he didn't believe me and went back to sleep. I have been looking at the manhole for the past two hours and nobody has come back out! I hope they are ok... Uh-huh, yes, one of them was dressed all in black like one of those Chinese fellows from that "Grouchy Tiger and Smitten Dragon" movie that Henry likes to watch and the other one was dressed as a fisherman with gumboots and rope or netting or something. I thought they were city workers except that they were talking really loudly and kept shining their headlamps into my bedroom window. They kept banging the manhole cover against the street. Don't worry, I put a blanket in the dryer and some cookies in the oven for when they come out."

Who's draining in this weather!?

Thank God; I'm not in my 20s still...uh, I mean...yet...

<shakes head>

Upon searching for some info about an old friend of mine, I stumbled across this forum again. Apparently I joined in 2005... I'm such a chronic lurker. I don't know how many of you made friends with the homeless people that hung out outside of Swans, but Gizmo has been mentioned several times in this thread. I thought I should let you know that he passed away in December 2010, head trauma I believe. His secrets of the underground, died with him. Since there are so few people who knew him, I think we owe it to him to remember him well and thank him for whatever secrets he shared. Another one bites the dust. RIP Giz.

I do not condone urban exploration. It is dangerous.

However, in the name of scientific hydrological accuracy, I do feel it is of significance to provide further insight into the finer points of the "if it rains, don't drain" rule that I routinely hear from these stupid punks who frequent in the presence of my life.

Not all cities have storm drain/water works systems that are (generally) prone to flash flooding.

Different urban areas will have different responsiveness to what the sky throws down at us.

Different weather zones will also yield different results. In areas such as Australia and Arizona and California, rain often comes down in heavy downpours, after long periods without rain. Hence, flash floods.

In other areas of the world, rain is more frequent and does not come down that heavily. Our definition of heavy rain actually isn't that heavy compared to lots of other parts of the world. The difference is, we just get it a lot more often.
Also, many cities will have higher rates of rainfall absorption. Cities that are surrounded by forests, and have lots of parks, will have less water instantly rushing into the storm drains. In many areas (e.g. Phoenix) the floodways are the combined result of lots of concrete and hardened desert sands that are not particularly permeable. Calgary is another similar example.

Terrain can have a major impact. If natural creeks are kept open as, well, creeks, then they aren't part of a confined tunnel system. Cities that have really culverted creek systems will have lots of tunnel-flooding, especially if the creeks are surrounded by tons of concrete.

If a terrain has lots and lots of tiny watersheds, with a large storm drain servicing each watershed, the load from rainfall can be divided up, and can be hard to notice, even in torrential rains. Cities that do not have varied topography (aka Calgary) are extremely prone to having all the water suddenly drain one direction all at once. Also, if a city is surrounded by large open areas draining into it's underground system, that can be a major element. Flash floods frequently occur in such systems.

Also, cities that have extremely high rates of overflow into the sanitary sewers can sometimes have "relief" placed onto storm drains by the time the water reaches larger conduits.

Lastly, soil conditions can play an extremely significant role in the speed of rainfall infiltration.

There are infinitely finer (and fascinating) points to the intricate workings of watersheds. I'm sure Tanuki would be happy to add any of his thoughts if there is anything blatantly wrong I've said.

Don't go exploring. It's very, very dangerous.

Excellent essay NK. I know your last line was SNL material, so will leave it alone. (couldn't improve on it if I tried) You will go far young man. Sad and sorry to hear of Gizmos's passing.

Mod: I strongly hope this 'head trauma' was not from violence inflicted on him by others.

I have been one of the homeless who has "hung out" (panhandled) over the years outside of Swans, albeit not in the past 5 years or so. Still, I miss my making a fresh batch of shine, then making the train trip down island, right to the Whale wall. I prob knew Giz, as much as anyone on the street knows anyone, but I can't be sure. RIP, we'll meet you on the other side Gizmo, then we can trade stories.

That's some pretty strong shine, Brother. The train actually goes up island, but maybe you were standing on your head when you left town.

As for Gizmo, it's always sad to learn of another's passing under such terrible circumstances, and all the more so knowing that this person lived a hard life in such an uncaring and remorseless world. Take in a visit to Our Place sometime. There's an entire wall dedicated to street people (how I loath that term) who have passed over the years. People who were familiar faces, people you see every day scrambling an existence together from the scraps tossed to them by passers-by, and then suddenly these fixtures of downtown life are gone.

I only ever knew Gizmo when he wasn't doing so well.

I met him shortly after the very sad demise of his dog.

I can't comment on anything about what kind of a person he was, what his personality was like, where he came from, what his hobbies were, none of that.

I don't know how he died. I don't know what caused him to become homeless.

What I do know is that I learned some things from him. And I do know of at least one person who loved him when he was homeless.

It's unfortunate that this happened, I guess. When I first met Gizmo, I thought he was in his '80's. Much later, I learned he was about 50.

RIP.

And thanks for spending the time to share your stories.

??? The train makes the return trip in the afternoon, leaves Court-mox at about 1 in the afternoon, heading back to Vic, for about 6, you can take a one way trip. I do it all the time.

PS, as I write this, the train has been suspended , indefinitely, due to poor track conditions. It may never get going again. Sad, once a railway stops, it is very hard to get it back. This Island has no idea what they are loosing.
