revelation at Chute's

Adam_Zelotes and I made a return trip to the cave last weekend with the intention of exploring the mud tunnel with my new raft.
When we got to the main room, I took out the raft and tried to blow it up - damn! It apparently required an actual pump. I couldn't get any air to go in at all. I left the limp piece of crap in the cave for a 2nd attempt on the following friday.
Luckily, we brought our cameras on this first night. Adam set up 96 tealights (a record for my own experiences) while I videotaped a bat trying to kill me.

The aformentioned following friday: D_Wrex, me, and my cave-loving friend Brian went back to do the mud tunnel once and for all.
D was with me when I purchased the raft a few weeks earlier, and told me that he owned the same model, and that you did NOT need a pump to blow it up. I had my fingers crossed as we slowly made our way to the waiting floatation device. D skillfully demonstrated how to prepare the hole so that it could be inflated without a pump.
Before we had it fully inflated, Brian got anxious and started trudging through the tunnel on foot! Anyone who has made a similar attempt knows how hard it is!
By the time the raft was in a condition to set sail, Brian was already half-way to the corner. It was a one-man raft, so D stayed behind and took self-portraits while I swiftly and comfortably caught up, passed, and left behind my courageous friend.
Last week, Adam and I stood at the edge of this muddy passageway and realized that there was a distinct sound coming from far within - the sound of machinery!
Now that we were actually inside, we would be able to tell where that somewhat creepy sound was coming from. We found that it wasn't machinery at all, but water flowing into a side passage and possibly forming a small waterfall some distance inside (we still have to explore this section).
I arrived at the corner and found that it turned exactly 90 degrees to the right. Brian was actually pretty close behind me. The water was almost waist deep at the corner, judging from sticking my oars underneath. The mud at the bottom was loose enough for a human to sink a good 2 feet into it, though, and I warned Brian about it. I took off into the unknown while Brian waited near the corner. There were bats hanging from the walls. The water was FREEZING! I could feel it through the raft. I was clipping at a speed of about 15 knots as Brian's light faded into the past.
I forgot to mention the rumor I heard about what was at the "end" of this tunnel: The water was supposed to get deep enough eventually so that it reached the ceiling. Soon, I realized that this rumor was about to become truth. As the water kept rising, the walls closed in on me, as the walls near the ceiling are more narrow than the lower section. Eventually, I began to become stuck. I was forced to duck down low and use my hands to paddle. My boat couldn't fit. I shined my light ahead of me and saw the point where the water reached the ceiling - about 50 feet in front of me. I could hear the water lapping against it. It was a scary sound. This was one of the most desolate spots I had ever been to. I liked it.
I had to row backwards for awhile before the passage was wide enough to turn around. It was difficult to avoid hitting my head on bats as I rowed backwards.

When we exited an hour later - it's a long, slow haul to get out (for those of you who haven't been there) - Brian decided to head for home. D and I wanted to scout out a building that I had my eye on for awhile.
We got there and realized that it was most likely being used as a crackhouse, so we became uninterested in finding our way in. It was a beautiful building, though! It looked like it was most likely a vaudeville-era theater. We walked around to the side and saw something that we could not believe. A manhole next to the building with the lid half-way off! I quickly shined my light inside and immediately found that it was a basement access!

Plans are to return with more people and possibly with weapons to fight off the predicted defensive beings inside. THAT will be a story.
