| | Crane Climbing < on 12/2/2004 12:37 AM >
| | | So... who's done it? Along with Drie and Noah, I recently climbed a tower crane in an undisclosed location -- was quite exhilarating. I recommend only doing it in very dark and relatively secluded locales though, and at night, as otherwise the probability of being caught is fairly high. Anyway, share your experiences!

Really? Yeah I remember seeing that picture of you on one. Was it just a case of the "people don't look up" principle? I guess I'm so used to looking at stuff like that, I don't even think of people NOT seeing you because they just aren't observant.

| | | a few times, i can't remember though because it was a long time ago. there was lots of construction equipment near my parents house when my brother and i were growing up. We climbed on and played in all sorts of weird things.

Basically. And even if they do look up, as long as you don't do anything flagrantly attention-getting, no one is going to notice you climbing inside the frame because they're not actually looking for you. They might just look at the crane for a second, and then go back to whatever. If you're wearing dark clothing, the exterior frame will probably be brighter than you, and that is basically all they'll see. This is not to say no one ever gets caught climbing cranes. I'm pretty sure I've read several times on here or in infiltration of people getting caught doing it. But they never struck me as particularly cautious people - it always sounded like a drunken exploit gone wrong. I'm cautious to the extent that I'll stop and stay low on a platform anytime a security or police vehicle is in sight, even though that level of caution in itself is probably unnecessary.

| | | I climbed a crane about six years ago in Mississauga, at a work site just west of Higway 10 on Dundas. It was about eight stories, if I remember correctly. Myself and a friend took our slingshots with us, and some glow-in-the-dark shot that he had, just to see how far we could fire those things from such a height. I shot far, I'm guessing with the extra height I must have fired that shot about 600 yards, but my friend Chris easily fired his about 800 yards. Hey, what can I say, it was stupid, but we had fun. | | | crane climbing is the shit man! i used to live in a high construction area downtown Calgary. i think the tallest crane i managed to get up was about 19 floors (i'll check my source later on that). the view was amazing. unfortunately i didn't have any mode of photographic documenting at that point.

| | | Yeah, the one we were on, we compared to a nearby building and found we were 20+ stories up. I can't believe I even managed to get up the thing, but wow, that was an incredible view. I don't know if they build free-standing skycranes/tower cranes much taller. One thing I wondered while up there... the poor guy that works that thing has to climb down and back up every time he wants to go to the bathroom. Unless you pop a squat off the side.

| | | I think the term to use in polite company is "pork a fritter". Anyway, I have never been crane climbing myself. Primarily because I don't have a harness. I do enjoy climbing things, and have free-climbed up the side of a 5-story scaffold. That was a blast!

| | | Well, I don't think you'd need a harness for tower cranes. The most common variety have staggered, caged ladders that break every 15 feet or so, and platforms along with them. So you climb up a level, walk around to the next ladder, climb up another... etc. This is a consequence of how they're put up (in sections) and also that climbing a 20-story straight-up ladder would be a bitch. Now if you tried to climb a breakneck crane or a standard boom crane... that would kinda suck without gear, yeah. Although I know one crazy poon around here who's done it...

| | | out of sheer curiosity, what is the record for most floors climbed on a crane by an Explorer (and if there is UE awards, this should be one of them...)?? turns out that the one crane i was climbing (mentioned in previous post) ended up being 30 residential floors.
