UE people help needed.
< on 11/13/2004 11:24 AM >

I am not sure if this is the right area, if not please move it.

I am currently looking for some people’s opinions of urban exploration, more so their idea’s on the buildings and exploring them. Like why do you do explore, what about these buildings and locations is of interest to you and why? What are the feelings you get while exploring these locations?

Any input is appreciated and welcomed, but please in the next day or two of this post. It is for a school project.

Cheers.

I explore because I’m curious. I like to see what are behind closed doors or behind a sheet of plywood. When you’re in an abandoned building, I like to look around and imagine what it was like when it was open. The decay in a building is also a nice feature but the thing I like the most is the noise. It’s usually very quiet and calm inside. I remember going in a church on a rainy day and the sound of the water leaking inside and falling was just amazing.

When I go in steam tunnels and the such, it's more for the thrill.

Good question. I hope this helps so here goes:

Like why do you do explore

Me, I have a curious (some say nosy) nature and have a need to learn about the building's history.

What about these buildings and locations is of interest to you and why?

I've always had some fascination with old buildings (both active and derelict) and love checking out the various features such as lighting fixtures, wiring and ornamentation on a building. Some of these things are no longer produced or where custom made and that gives the building or location an individuality that is sadly lacking today in many newly constructed buildings.

What are the feelings you get while exploring these locations?

I get many feelings while exploring these locations. One example is that I find myself wondering when looking at a certain item (eg window) what the worker was thinking when s/he installed that window when the building was being built. Was s/he in a good mood? (eg. got a raise or other good news) Was s/he in a bad mood? (blasted by an asshole boss) or what is the major news item at the time?

Another example is maybe I had personal memories of the place when it was active. For example, I have memories of working at the Whitby Psych and when I did my little trip in '94, I was rather reluctant to leave. Seeing all these pictures here had brought back memories so kudos to all those who contributed.

And last but not least, I often wonder about the people who used these buildings before. I often wonder where they've been, where they are now and again what their thoughts would be at different times.

I hope this helps and wish you good luck on your project. Sorry for the long winded post.

i do it cuz i love to explore. i like seein stuff ive never seen before. plus who knows whats on the other side of a door of an old abandoned mental hospital, might be a old room full of records of peoples lives, might be a stash of mint surgical tools i can hang on my wall, might be a five story drop like in danvers. ya never know, could be anything really. i guess i like suprises. that and that awsome, covert, elite feel ya get when your five feet away from a guard snappin pictures and he has no idea (keti damn near has an orgasm when she spies on guards). yep i guess that sums up why i do it. that and awsome stories i have to tell after awsome stuff happens.

I explore because I feel that through exploring abandonments I get a better understanding of the meaning of life and time. For me its about seeing places that have stayed the same in time while the world has moved on.

Peoples opinions on Urban Exploration are likely to vary as much as peoples opinions on what Urban Exploration actually is.

I don't consider myself an Urban Explorer so to say because I don't have the drive to get up onto the roof of a functioning hospital, or up into the projector room of a theatre, or jump onto the back of a moving train, etc. This is not because of the risk factor (although I do hate getting in trouble, and breaking bones kinda sucks too) but rather because of my bare interests. By this I mean I am a heritage buff, but I HATE that term. I am a fucking heritage vacuum. If there's something out there built before 1930 and proudly taunts with its character, then I want it.

My poison is abandonments. Thrillseekers roll eyes now. I can stand in the middle of an old crumbling farmhouse for an hour, envisioning each of the 90 different Christmas trees, or how many times that big leaded bay window was broken by a kid's baseball before some dickhead did it yesterday with his foot. I establish where people had their furniture. I count the layers of flooring in the living room. I completely restore it and live in it for the rest of my life. Then I go outside and scour the wild overgrown yard for that baseball. I find it, and then I go home.

That's how passionate I am with my old houses, because it's such a cool feeling when you realize you probably have some history here that didn't make it into any book in the local library. With a little research to go with your fresh photos, you once again have a piece of the puzzle that nobody living has.

Hey Viking, I'm a freak like that too!
I always hope there will be structures when I go looking for history, but I'm usually disappointed.
I spent two hours looking for an 80 year old bottle factory containing an entire village. I found; one foundation and a piece of a kiln. Of course I got to get some exercise.
Today I went looking for the base camp of the old thirties Civilian Conservation Corps. I saw an old bridge abutment by the edge of the road , thought I was onto something huge.
I found; several old roads, some chimneys, cement pads, and a basement that might as well have been from post war Berlin;

Oh well, every once in a while you find a gem that no one realizes are still standing. In this case, the State DEC razes buildings once they revert to state ownership, so they will comply with the Wild Forest designation. Damn shame.

I got your tour winner right here pussies, at least he'd crash out trying.

The feeling that i get when i imagine
-Going to secret places
-Setting of on an adventure
-Seeing buildings that have been left behind in time
-Getting away from boring normal places to search for an amazing place of your own and going on a massive adventure that takes you to all different types of places and time periods

it gives me an amazing feeling of joy, adventure and mystery that i cant explain!

I have to say I do it more for the adventure. To tell the truth, I would rather just go be a crazy wondering man not held down by anything, but I just can't leave my girlfriend. Ue is the replacement to the life I have a slight yearning for. Before I met her Ue was a way to hold me back from just leaving, its grown on me more over time though.

Very much information about the reasons behind UE is linked to in my journal, I hope you can read it in time for your project.

When I explore, I take everything from a more historical point
of view. I try to imagine what the structure looked like back when it
was built or whatnot. Also, I like the mystique of exploring, and not
knowing what to expect when you explore different places. Another reason
I explore is for photography. It's a hobby I have gotten back into after
neglecting it for so long.
Each location has it's own allure and uniqueness. But above all
else, exploring is just a whole lot of fun, sometimes getting a rush from
being somewhere your not supposed to be.

I'm not much of a UEer (too old, too many responsibilities) so my "explorations" are pretty tame. But I think the desire to explore our surroundings comes from a need to know who we are, where we've been, how we got here, etc. The world is moving toward sameness and blandness, a never-ending strip mall of crappy chain restaurants and department stores. Where is the soul in that?

Rather than be subject to arrest, those who dare to explore should be celebrated. The finest tribute I've seen to the Hamm's Brewery came not from a history book or corporate website, but from the Actionsquad. And to do it they risked alarms, razor wire, and the threat of jail. Ridiculous!

We need to examine and document our past to learn anything from it. Since developers don't care about anything except making a buck, it's everyone's responsibility to explore whenever the opportunity exists, prior to the wrecking ball coming in and new parking lot going up. History belongs to everyone, not just to those with money or keys to the locked door.

Unfortunately I don't have the book in front of me or I could use the proper terminology and give references. Can you tell I spent 6 years of my life locked in an institute of higher learning? <sigh> Anyways...

Aside from the TAZ concept by Hakim Bey, historical and good old anarchistic reasons to explore another reason that maybe none of us are consciously aware of is evolutionary. Those specimens of a species that are driven to innovate, experiment, and explore are better able to adapt to changing environments or make new discoveries and/or innovations. Put simply, exploration is a survival tactic.

Its something I intend to research further. Look for a series of articles on the www.UEA.ca articles page on why we explore, what it means, etc.
