Very close call.

Last night myself and Wolfman checked out an apartment building that was being gutted. Nothing too exciting inside, although climbing up 3-stories on scaffold to get inside was fun. The night was still young, and throwing out places to check out we decided to have a look-see at Woodlands Hospital and the main building there.

Very eerily a thick blanket of fog descended on our way to Woodlands to add to the spooky atmosphere of the site. Starting out while finding a place to park, we drove through a police road check on the main road beside Woodlands. Development has started on the site but the main building remains abandoned. The tunnel mouth ended where a construction pit was dug beside the building, where detox used to be. And although the opening was somewhat blocked off we entered the building through the tunnel. The tunnel had 3-6 inches of mud on the floor. After we got our shoes nice and dirty we worked up to the top two floors since we haven't seen them yet, and looked around. After almost an hour, we were in a large room on the South East corner of the building and were thinking about heading out.

Any chance I get whenever I am on a lower floor of a building, I check the windows if they open in case in need of a hasty exit (which came in very handy last night). After I found the only window in the room that was not boarded-up opened, I looked back to see why Wolfman was standing silent. Tip-toeing to where he was he whispered to me he heard faint voices, likely kids smoking pot somewhere on the floor. Looking around the room the only hiding spot was a large door propped up at an angle against the inside wall. We saw a flash from a flashlight that might have been from somewhere outside, then we heard footsteps from inside getting louder, so we shot underneath the door for cover. We were kneeling underneath the door, but the door was not wide enough to cover our shoes which were sticking out each end (I imagine it would have looked quite funny if someone came in and saw that).

Then a man started talking either inside the room or just outside it. I thought he was talking to himself about a building being built in 1918 and WW2 and stuff while Wolfman thought he was talking to someone on a cell phone and/or speaking French. Looking back I saw a faint flashlight beam moving around the room that could have been reflected off the windows. Then all went silent. We heard cricks and creaks we weren't sure what were from. We could both hear each other's heart beats, and just swallowing seemed to make a lot of noise. We weren't sure where he was.

After about half an hour hunched under the door we figured it was now or never. If he was sitting there waiting for us to come out we would find out. I stealthily moved toward the window avoiding all the broken glass on the floor, and opened the window hoping it would open wide enough to get through. It did. When I was outside the window sill I signalled Wolfman to follow, and we jumped down to the ground from the second floor after I closed the window (Wolfman doesn't land very quietly). We ran as fast as we could down the hill to the street, jumped over the iron fence and walked to my vehicle. It must have taken an hour for our adrenaline to wear off. Was he security, and was he responding to motion sensors? I guess we'll never know...

Here are a couple shots Wolfman took from our adventure. All were with a 15 second exposure, except the last one:

The hellish aftermath-our shoes were caked with mud up to our ankles and our socks were completely wet. All in the name of Urban Exploration:
