Much of the historic campus of Rancho Los Amigos in Downey, CA is presently being demolished by order of the Los Angeles County Supervisors, in part due to vandalism and arson. We've been meeting with the county to advocate for preservation of the buildings and landscape of the central quad, and the towering Bunya Bunya tree which was recently struck by lightning.

Here's a video showing the current state of this portion of the property, with our hopes for an interpretive history center and public green space: https://esotouric....rvation-demolition

Really sad to see a place which so much historical value being torn down with honestly not much regard to preserving it. True, they are saving a few things, but the scale of this place is absolutely massive. I wish I was able to see more of this place before they started demolition. Hope they are able to save more before it's all gone.

Any salvage or saving of architectural pieces?
It has been years since I went through that place, but I remember in some of the buildings there were still a number of intact fixtures, pieces of furniture and some other period and vintage items laying about.

Any hope in saving / preserving those?

From the documentation I can find, it looks like they are only saving the administration building and one tree. The video above also states the power plant, but I can’t seem to find anything in writing about that. As of recent, extensive demolition as already begun. Looks like the city is just tied of spending money on upkeep and security and just wants nothing to do anymore with the property and it’s historical significance.

Such a drag. I would totally have paid for some bit of architectural history. The industrial design and materials like the windows, doors, and even what ever is left of the various fixtures would be great to have.

I live right down the street. Been through the entire campus countless times. It's lived it's life and it's time to go. The place is a disgusting mess of vandalism and collapsed unusable buildings and it's not even interesting to see anymore. The correct buildings are being saved.

Thanks for taking me years ago. Glad I got to see it while it was in a good place.

Such a shame. I visited this place in 2019 but it still wasn't looking great back then.
