Bunker? Not So Much

Hi, pretty new to the forum, but I've been exploring for a few years. Here are some more pictures of the detention center that trent_exe and I went to. There are multiple sources that claim there was supposed to be a bunker in the primary building we visited. After exploring, it seems like "disaster command center" would be a more appropriate term, as it lacks the typical protections one would normally think of when a "bunker" comes to mind. Even "fallout shelter" seems pretty embellished for what it really is.

Guard tower electrical and toilet

Tail of crashed helicopter

In the building of the crashed helicopter

Informational folder on fallout shelters

Looking down the first floor hallway into the start of the "command center"

Signs that these buildings have been used for training

8 track reel strewn across the floor

Outside view of the main building we explored

The odd mural I had mentioned

Tek has more photos of it. The facility is now being used by local emergency services as a training center. Based on what we saw, and how the helicopter was resting, I believe it was actually placed there for training purposes. It was positioned quite perfectly on structural support…too perfectly to be a legitimate crash in my opinion.

Abandoned movie set, perhaps?

It absolutely positively was once a pretty important local civil defense emergency operations center used by the governmental... er, district it was located near. Because of how that municipality was set-up and the types of entities that had major offices within it, the EOC had a lot of federal gov't liasion.

Abandoned intact & replaced by a newer facility elsewhere decades ago, if you were able to actually get into the old EOC, I'd like to think it's still intact -- maps & charts, old telephones, desks, file cabinets, etc. did remain in-place long after closure.

As a Cold War EOC, though it would have been obliterated quickly in a nuclear war due to the area it's in, so spending $$ on making walls 3' thick would have been a water of money, though nonetheless it had some decent physical security, etc. that may have hidden it a little from the usual vandals, or at-least made it somewhat difficult to gain entry to.

Back in the day when the main, overt mission of the grounds was taking place, it was a dirty, scary, depressing place that no one really went to unless they had to...

Part of the grounds started off in the 1950s as an important Cold War military site until it shut down and the detention center facility was built on the grounds. Some remains of this original military use were still there, but likely have or will be demolished as part of the old or current plans to re-develop the land.

As you noticed, local/state/federal LE & disaster response teams have used the grounds for training scenarios.
