Known as Iron Soup, these homes were built for the workers of the Youngstown Sheet & Tube Company in Campbell, Ohio between 1918 and 1920. It was the first prefabricated concrete subdivision in the world. Each employee was allocated a two-bedroom home where they could raise a family, although each of the 248 units was still owned by the company. On Black Monday in 1977, Youngstown Sheet & Tube closed and 4,000 people lost their jobs. Iron Soup was still mostly inhabited until around 1995 when gangs, drugs, and human trafficking began to plague the neighborhood. Today, a few of the units are still occupied but most are abandoned or burned and open to the elements. Some of the current occupants are working to renovate some of the units that are not beyond repair in hopes of using them as housing for veterans or for some other purpose but haven't made much progress thus far due to financial constraints.
