If you don't know, a DIY skatepark is a skatepark made by skaters themselves usually in an abandoned spot. There's one near me on an abandoned bridge that has a few ramps and ledges made of concrete.

I think it adds a lot of character to a spot but some people may see it as vandalism or destruction. What do you think?

I appreciate the work that goes into them. While I haven’t been on my board in a decade (pretty sure my glory days have passed), I do have a van full of tools and I’d definitely be down to put in some work.

I think they're cool. I admire the DIY punk ethos that underlies their creation.

And while I'm naturally against activities that blow cool spots, these skateparks are never in pristine abandonments. They're always in the blown out spots that everyone knows about anyway, so instead of contributing to their destruction the parks actually add to the location and make it more interesting. Plus, reusing them as a community-building project is an awesome improvement to the local community.

I live in this boring, control freaked, 'rich' country of The Netherlands. We have our state built skateparks in every town which are hardly used anymore now skateboarding is pretty much out of fashion. The scooter kids still enjoy it somewhat but the hardcore skaters (including me) got 'old' with important jobs and families to maintain. My girlfriend comes from Warsaw Poland. She showed me around last winter, casually pointing out this huge amazing bowl under a bridge. Turns out it's entirely constructed by locals without any government interference. It used to be some abandoned parking garage or something, inhabited by bums (they still live on a higher floor). For the past years they even had to fight for the park since the local council suddenly decided to make plans for this part of the bridge and demolishing the skatepark after years of turning a blind eye. I don't know the exact outcome but seeing how quiet it is on their Facebook page, I doubt there has been much progress.

It's a double-edged sword in a country like Poland. They are not rich and DIY is big. There are amazing creative little cafes and restaurants made with the minimum amounts of funds in beautiful ancient buildings, old train stations etc. On the other hand, the government can decide to remove something with the blink of an eye.

The one I linked was in a previously fairly pristine (and somewhat dangerous in places) site.

...eh, if the idea is cool enough it can still make the location even more interesting

I think they are so sick. About two weeks ago we built one in my town. Everybody in the skate community showed up and put in work and everyone just had a really fun time. Bunch of the guys were construction workers so they were teaching everyone how to pour concrete and everything

There used to be one in a location I frequented in 2006-2008. I wish I took images of it....the kids stole parking barriers, carts, etc and had it set up real nice. The building also had all this old ('90) graffiti time capsuled in it. What's wrong with using the space? It took alot of work to do. Shame that now it's a gym.
