I personally use Google Maps, but am looking at other options since the My Maps app is going away. Ideally, something more mobile-friendly that can support over 1k pins would be useful.

As a side note, What3Words is kinda cool. It replaces decimal coordinates with single three-meter tiles that each have their own unique set of three words. This allows for more accurate marker placements along property lines and entrances while making pins easy to remember.

So, how do you keep tabs on all of your locations?

As of now, sadly, I found nothing better than my maps. For mobile, since I'm often in areas with no internet service, I use Locus Map 3. It's a one time purchase. The app ''understand'' the icons of the google KMZ, it's a huge plus for me. Many free topo maps are available for this app. Also, if you tweak Locus map a bit, it is possible to download some satellite image for offline use.

Haha didn't know about What3words, the tile of my backyard is *****.smelter.dreams I'ts appropriate.

I've heard good things about Mapbox but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. I'm not sure if it supports kml files but even if it doesn't, it can't be too hard to write a python script converting kml to whatever it natively parses.

I'm also in the market for new pin organization software. I've been unhappy with MyMaps for a while now, and now that they are doing away with the mobile app I've got absolutely no reason to continue being stuck with it.

I'll follow up here if I find anything that works for me.

Just to confirm, this is a stand alone app, right? I have hundreds of of pins on Google Maps through Chrome. Just wanna be sure that is NOT the same as My Maps?

Yeah my question is the same. I use MyMaps on my computer mostly, but alsop use the Google Maps app on my phone. Although I never edit those maps from my phone, it's very practical to have it on the phone while out exploring.

To be clear you aren't at risk of losing your maps or pins or anything like that. They are just dropping support for the MyMaps mobile app, and planning to rely on mobile browser viewing instead. Which sucks.

Huh... I've used MyMaps extensively, for years, for a variety of different things and never once thought to even look for a mobile ap. I guess I do all my sorting and categorizing and whatnot on an actual computer, and just reference it in Google Maps when I'm out.

Ditto. I do get screwed when I have no signal, which happens frequently when I am in survival mode primitive camping, or literally always on my land up north. However I generally plan ahead with screen shots, PDF, and/or paper maps if I know I am going somewhere unfamiliar...

Does Google Maps not crash for you guys when you try to load your map? For me it throws a "too many layers to view in google maps" error. Are you guys all only using single layer maps? Seems unlikely given the cap for number of pins is only 2k...

For just camping and wilderness exploring (or even driving aimlessly through the back country) maps.me is a fantastic app. You can download regional maps to your phone (they don't take up hardly any space) and if you can get ANY half-assed signal AT ALL it does a great job in the places where Google and Apple maps struggle.

You CAN create and import pins and the like, but it's a bit of a hassle. For camping and general away from town wandering, I love it.

I don't, but I also wasn't aware of the layers. However that may be the answer to an issue I am having. Depending on where my zoom is, pins disappear/appear/reappear. Would it be possible for a guy that was unaware of layers to drop pins on different or even multiple layers without even knowing it, or am I experiencing a different problem?
