Silo City, Buffalo, NY - July 2021 < on 8/16/2021 6:36 PM > | Reply with Quote
I had to go to Buffalo for a day for boring reasons, so I of course wanted to make the most of it by taking a friend to explore something abandoned. I didn't have a lot of time to do my homework, so I booked a vertical tour of Silo City because it was the most straightforward, google-able thing. It was beautiful. The tour gave me a natural body buzz I don't know how to otherwise describe, by the end of the hours we spent inside I was practically vibrating from excitement. I took all the photos with my iPhone.

These tall buildings on rails are "Marine Legs". This was one of the most exciting parts for me as I'd never seen anything like it before. According to our guide, Harry, these buildings were on wheels so that the conveyor system inside could be moved from hold to hold on the ship to balance the removal of grain and hence the pressure on the hull of the ship. The Marine leg could be moved more easily than the large ships that were many times over 600’ long (but sometimes the ship had to be moved eventually. Here is more information from the excellent Buffalo Architecture and History website: https://buffaloah....hilds/87/legs.html
Self-portraits The caboose reflection was achieved by resting my phone on the hood of someone's shiny jeep and using the 10-second delay. Yes, I wore a gopro(knockoff) in my hair as a fascinator (I have yet to review the footage!). Was very grateful for the n95 mask. It was musty.

Nice shots! This site is like Montréal's abandoned silo complex on steroids.
Did you get into many of the different buildings/facilities, or just the Perot? Did you take that aerial conveyor over to the American [corporation] elevator?
What's the surveillance situation like there, and how easy is it to move around on-site undetected to find POE's? I really want to check out this place!

When you say "booked a tour", is this some kind of legit tour operator that takes people around these silos? Can you provide more information on this business?

What the others have said is true, I purchased a ticket to a publicly accessible tour, led by a historic tour guide. I took the vertical tour. It was great.
I only had about 4-hours notice that I was going to have to go to Buffalo for a day, so I didn't have a lot of time to figure out where to urban explore beyond that.
