Captains Log:

I awoke to the sound of static. I didn't have an alarm clock, so i had rigged my $5 black and white tv to a christmas light timer that i had found in the trash at school. It ran from an extension cord through my bedroom window, out to the garage, since that half of our house didn't have any power. It was an old trailer house, falling apart, cold as hell in the winter. The static from the tv was quite annoying, and on the other side of the room. So i got out of bed, tripped over the mess on the floor, stepped on a lego and swore. I turned off the tv. Pitch black. It was 5:00 am. I reached for the flash light that i kept nearby, but to no avail. It wasn't there. Rats i thought, what a way to start my day. I tripped my way back to my bed, found the light laying on the floor, and clicked it on.

It was the beggining of another day of 8th grade. I get ready by digging through the pile of clothes on the floor, looking for anything remotely clean to wear. Sniffing and shaking my clothes was an everymorning occurance, nothing out of the ordinary. I dress, eat some cereal, watch a bit of tv. I leave the sanctity of the trailer, with back pack in hand, i walk to the end of our dirt driveway. I lived in the midst of farm fields, endless seas of corn, cows and beans. I was the second stop for my bus driver. I chose to sit in the rear of the bus, the last seat. After a few minutes, we make a stop. Then another. And more stops. Then he gets on, i can't quite remember what his name was, he was in 11th grade, and thought that the school was his. He wanted the last seat. My seat. I wasn't about to give it up without a fight. Eventually he starts yelling. The bus is now stopped, and everyone is watching. He finally quits talking, and grabs me by the neck. Bad idea. My Redneck instincts come out swinging. I bust his nose wide open. Blood. He hits me in the ear, it rings wildly. Pissed off, i swing with my back pack, hit him square in the jaw, temple. His eyes roll, and he falls to the bus floor.

The bus driver radios the school, after the ambulance and the police arive, the incident was written up, statements taken. I was brought to the principals office. My dad waiting. The medical report was back, i knocked him out, and fractured his jaw. I had a metal lunch box in my backpack that did it. The school board was also there, they were contemplating expulsion. It was the mayors son. His mom was on the school board. I thought I was doomed. After legal council arrived, it was discussed and debated. I wasn't expelled. I was prohibited from ever riding the bus again. Never again.

It was 12 miles to school. My parents couldn't drive me, they worked. So it was up to me. I walked a few times, but mainly i rode my bicycle.

My bicycle became my ship. And since that fateful day, 13 years ago, it has come to port on many an adventure.
