Abandoned Drive-In Movie Theatre and large Safe found! in Ontario, Canada

I have been to this location a few times just to explore the property as the main building was always sealed up tight. I had a tip from another explorer that the building was now open so I headed there right away.
This 1 screen Drive-In was owned and operated for over 50 years. Over the years the Drive-In attracted many locals and cottagers. Back in the day they would easily fill the 500 car capacity lot and even turn people away. The changing technology and health issues have forced the closure of this theatre years ago. At the time the movies were changing to digital format and the projectors would have had to be replaced at a very high cost. With this and the decline of customers they closed the Drive-In.
While exploring this location there was a very old Safe. J.&J. Taylor Safe Works. They started building Safes in 1855 but closed in the 1920’s. The Safes were very heavy, bulky, fire and theft proof and were built to last. J.&J. Taylor was the most successful manufacturer of Safes in North America at this time. It looked like someone tried very hard to get into this Safe but failed. They ripped apart the top of the Safe to only find another thicker layer of steel inside. I cant add quality photos on here for some reason I apologize.

Neat little place. Would be sick to roll out there with a generator and see if the projector still runs, if it even uses normal power. A couple years ago a friend and I lugged a homemade 120VAC battery up four flights of stairs in an abandoned mill to see if an old Dell desktop computer there still worked, and it did.

Doubt that safe even has anything in it, doesn't make much fiscal sense to leave your money behind after shuttering your source of income.

Lol that would be amazing! I heard the projectors give off lots of heat when in use.

Carbon arc lighting is low voltage, high amps. Seen some running off arc welding machines. They simply vent the heat exhaust outside.
If you look at the arc chamber you'll notice an elaborate mechanism that advances and rotate the feed carbon rod.

You can make a carbon arc furnace out of two carbon rods, a clay pot and 120 VAC @ 20-40 amps although 40VAC @60-120 amps produces a much more stable arc.
The WB is near perfect as well from an arc lamp.

Edit... lol just the facts

Cool location. The old projector is awesome. Usually they have been removed.

I try to visit the drive-ins left around me a couple times a year. Have to support the ones that are still around. Sure watching a movie with reclining chairs in Cineplex or Landmark are nice every once and awhile, but I'll take watching one with a camping chair under the stars over that anytime.

Great write-up and pics! And that YT walkthrough video was excellent!

Thank you very much! I’m the same way. I do like the fancy theatres but always go to the drive in with the family at least twice a summer. Not to many around in certain areas.

Nice! I took a walk around this spot last spring and it was locked up tight!

I don't get abandoning pop machines if they work. Such an easy money earner in the right location.

Yes I have been 3 times now but the 3rd time I was told by another explorer it was open. Cool place might want to check to see if it’s still open

I think drive ins and bowling alleys sort of go together as entertainment options that are indisputably fun, but dying nonetheless. Very cool set. As said by others, the projector and safe are awesome.

I used to live right down the road, taken many pictures and flown my drone here.
I believe someone has bought it recently.
