| There entry by becckeez 1/23/2019 5:22 AM
| After student teaching I lost it and decided to move to Alaska. It was in one of the fewer moments of clarity I had back then. I was sitting hungover in my mother's bathroom on the floor. In a desperate kind of way, I grabbed at a magazine she had lying around. It was a national geographic. I ... for whatever reason... made a bet with myself. That bet, was to flip the magazine open to a random page - whatever page I landed on, I'd sober up, pack my bags, and move there. When I flipped open the magazine, it landed on an article about polar bears in the Arctic. So off I went. It took a number of months, but once I had processed the finances, I was down to a single rolling suitcase, a guitar case, and a cat carrier. I boarded a flight in Charlottesville, Virginia from the tarmac in mid spring of 2014. The last I saw of Virginia was one of my classically favorite - the sun rising and reflecting the blue of the Blue Ridge mountains. From there, the flight shifted north to Chicago where I caught a connection to Ted Stevens, ANC, Alaska. Thanks to the kindness and guidance of numerous strangers I was able to start a life in this far out and strange land. An uptight east coast city girl had to totally let go and rely on instinct. Let go and adapt. Since that spring, way back in 2014 I've spent time living THERE: in Downtown Anchorage, Kotzebue Hub, Kivalina Village, the city of Skagway, and the city of Whitehorse.
