Socal: first time drain!

I finally got around to exploring a storm drain for the first time and it was a blast! I started out a bit before dawn and walked about half a mile up the drain to its origin. Overall, a highly successful first trip.

First time posting pictures, so please let me know if I should edit for content.

The city painted over the graffiti within 20' of the mouth...and nothing else

It smelled musty but I was surprised by how little trash there was

I thought the below-street angle was pretty cool and unique

Graffiti at the upstream end lit by sunrise coming through the gutter drains

I didn't know what to expect and I was not disappointed

Welcome! Photo #4 looks cool. I like drains/tunnels that have rooms somewhere along the way. Never explore a drain when it’s raining or starting to rain in other counties. The result can be deathly. Use caution down there and keep your lanterns lit and bring a friend for safety sake. Hope to see more draining!

Thanks for the tips! I originally planned to go alone but had an adventure buddy join in last minute. Browsing old forum threads before going helped a lot, although I did neglect to bring gloves and ended up really regretting it.

Great pictures! I really like the composition and lighting of #4. I'm in SoCal as well and haven't done much draining around town, but I'm hoping to get out some more this summer when I have some free time.

Happy exploring!

Nice pics! As a SoCaler who got into urbex through draining, I love to see it. Pic #4 is super cool and spooky - is there a sudden downward incline where the reflection stops, or is that something else?

Also love pics like #3. Always strange to look up at the surface world from below like that.
