How do you find info on a house?
Posted on Forum: UER Forum
Hey guys, I'm trying to find an actual address (I only have coordinates) and background info on a few houses. I've tried searching the street name but I still can't find anything that mentions the houses.
I could really use some help, thanks.

Try using the search tool. There's a thread on this subject in the rookie forums.

If you have the street names, just take a stroll down the road and find them in person. Sometimes Google only gets you so far before you have to go outside.

If you're trying to figure out how to find abandoned homes in the first place? Official records regarding city- owned residential properties tend to be good places to start. If you can find information on foreclosed homes, that's also a good place to look. Sometimes they make it into the newspaper- I've found one that way. Otherwise, just keep an eye out whenever you wander around town.

Check the county GIS, depending on what system they use it can be really easy and helpful. Mecklenburg County, NC uses Polaris 3G which is pretty fantastic.

You can search by address, or street, or browse aerial photos and find all kinds of neat info (ownership, street address, topographic maps, and more).

An example of ours in action:

You might want to go to a local library and try looking at some sanborn insurance maps. If you google "sanborn" + wherever you live, you might get some old maps of the location. If you live in NJ like me, Princeton university digitized some of the 1906 maps, and those are a great tool.

"So what do you do for fun?" Oh I go in abandoned buildings and take pictures.

I think it's important we ask what exactly you're trying to learn. History? Think someone was murdered there? Want to know the floor plan?

I'm crazy so I go to town with research. If there is a for sale sign on or near the property usually I will look up real estate pages until I find it. I will look at Google Earth in multiple different time frames to see if there are any clues. One time I looked up a house on google earth and it showed that there was a big truck out front in 2011. I googled the company name on the side of the truck and found that they were a moving company so from that I know the house was abandoned in 2011. Pay attention to little details and you can find some really cool stuff!

I'm crazy so I go to town with research.

I did this when I bought my house a few years back. Found copies of every deed and survey back until the 40s when the land was subdivided, and then further back looking at area maps until the 18th century.

I helped another friend track down the current owners of a turn of the century mill that had been abandoned since the 90s so he could buy it. It is now only mostly abandoned as the owner winters in Florida and runs a hot rod shop out of it during the warmer months.
