would anybody here one day like to organize a trip to paris?

I know we are all spread out, but maybe all meet up there and have an underground party

Funny, I just came back from a 2 week trip there. Catas are pretty rad, but I strongly recommend you get a map otherwise it's pretty easy to get lost.

That's old news, isn't it? Odessa catacombs are way bigger than those in Paris. I wonder if the Odessa explorers already mapped the whole system yet.

I think it's on the order of 6 times larger. She was in 07? They claim it's all map out.

It was at a New Years party right? I read about it a year or two ago. I wonder how she died...

The catacombs would be cool as hell. I'd like to see the Roman ones too but unfortunately I don't think a trip to Europe is in the cards for me right now.

pretty cool, first time i hear of them.

I think in paris the catacombs are roughly 300km, odessa 6x more is huge.

What i like about Paris, they are all beautifully sculpted, plus its a huge tomb....Ups the spook factor

That is correct, the GRS (Grand Réseau Sud) is approximately 330km of inspection galleries linked together with a series of chatières and other tunnels.

Actually, the word "catacombs" is more or less true for the Paris networks of underground quarries. Those quarries were first used to extract stones to build the buildings, and they were in the suburbs surrounding Paris. As the city grew bigger, it became to a point where it started overlapping above the abandoned quarries. After a few cave-ins, the city administration created IGC (Inspection Générale des Carrières) to map and consolidate the quarries. What remained after are the inspection tunnels (they filled the quarries with earth, rock and dirt).

Soon after the consolidations, the overcrowded cemeteries were dug out, and they've put the bones and remains in an ossuary that they've dubbed "Paris Catacombs". The official ossuary, which you can visit for 12 euros and lots of patience (waiting line is more or less 3hrs long) is approximately 1,7km long.

Therefore, calling the whole GRS a "tomb" is note quite exact. There are a few stacks of bones here and there outside the official ossuary, but it's very rare. If you want to see more ossuaries, you must go outside of the GRS into smaller quarries that aren't connected to it.

The whole story of the Paris Catacombs is a very interesting one, there are tons of books on that subject if you're interested to learn more about it: Gilles Thomas wrote a few good ones, among others.

I was there about a month ago. If you just head down on a weekend, you'll surely run into a group of people in the more popular parts. Hell, I went down in the middle of the week and ran into a random group of people and explored with them until the sun came up. It was a blast.

There's always people down there, no matter which day of the week it is

In 2013 I went down with a friend on a friday night, we spent a few hours in the northern part of the GRS, and we only met 2 people when we were on our way out.

This year, the first time we went down was on a tuesday evening, and we met at least 3 different groups. Two days later, we did another trip in the southern part of the GRS, we must have met 30 people overall, some of which have been underground for 5 days in a row.
