The Douglas Darkie
entry by SadRobots

I never posted any of my photos from my first ever expedition, so here they are. A friend (J) and I decided to check out the Douglas Darkie last spring.
We took the bus down after our classes were over. We hung around on the trail, pretending to take pictures of birds until the coast was clear, then climbed down and walked into the drain. The inside of the pipe was coated with some sort of weird asphalt-like substance for the first 15 minutes or so (I have no idea how far it was, all I know is how long it took and we were walking really slowly). There were weird algae formations on the ceiling dripping water. I had my hood up over my hat because I was paranoid about spiders getting caught in my hair.

After walking for a while, we came out in a square concrete room with a few smaller pipes leading off of it. The room had all sorts of graffiti in it, like the illuminati eye, a cross and (my favourite) satan smoking a blunt.

After the concrete room, there was a bit more of the black, corrugated pipe. There was more graffiti in this section, mostly things trying to scare whoever came through. J and I had a good time reading off the graffiti in stupid voices to try and scare each other.

After a couple of minutes, we reached what I had really wanted to see: the section of wooden pipe.

As we walked, I kept running my gloves over, waxing poetic about how neat it was while J rolled her eyes at me. J had just made a joke about monsters under the city when this loud "Whumph!" sound came out the dark, making us both jump so hard that I slipped, twisting my shoulder and filling my boots with filthy water. We decided that was our cue to turn around and leave. On the way back out, we noticed candles set up around the concrete room that we hadn't noticed before, about 25 or 30 in all. I pulled one down to take a better picture of it.

Turns out those drains have pretty good cell reception. As we passed under a manhole cover, my dad called my phone, asking if we were done playing in the drainpipe yet

I'd love to go back one of these days and go further into the wooden section.
