Except for the ones like the XS that don't shoot video XD

I bought a Rebel XS as my first DSLR about 6 years ago. One day my dad comes running in my room telling me about this crazy whirlpool in our neighbors flooded yard saying I need to go get a video of it. To which I responded 'My camera doesn't shoot video.' To which he responded: 'Why the hell did you spend $500 on a camera that doesn't even shoot video?'

You should look into full frame if you're considering upgrading. Went from the XS to the 5D Mark II and it's amazing.

That's funny, I actually just recently upgraded to the t5i. I'm not that serious about the photography aspect so it seemed like a decent step up from the XS without having to empty my bank account. I haven't used it in the field yet but just from messing around with it in my apartment it seems like it's just what I wanted.

Im using my Nikon D90. I have a 50mm 1.8g and a kit lens 18-55mm. Im planning on getting a wide angle with autofocus for those generic foot dangling shots. Might invest in a new camera though. I dont know which one yet.

Not that I've been exploring lately, but my usual camera gear is a Nikon D7200 with a 50mm 1.8 more often than not. I am hoping to save up the cash for a 17-55 2.8 here soon though. Hell of a lens, even if it is heavy enough to kill someone with. It's that or just bite the bullet and get the ~$1600 14-24 2.8f.

If you shop around, you can get some pretty good deals on Nikon bodies lately. Adorama had the D7200 for $700 (refurb) a month or so ago. Kills me since I paid $1400 for mine new this time last year.

The D5300 has almost the same sensor and performance, just isn't weathersealed, autofocus motor, or magnesium framed, but goes as a kit for ~$500 on amazon.

IMO, unless you need the upgrades, I'd get the 5300 and spend the rest of the money on a Tokina 11-16 wide angle. Best sub $800 for Nikon DX cameras IMO.

Pentax K-7 and ZX-M. Both cheap and can take a beating. I'm hoping to pull enough money out of my ass to pick up the K-1 full frame when it rolls out.

I shoot with a Nikon D750, and typically I only bring a Nikkor 20mm 2.8 prime with me.

Looking into swapping the 20 out with a 17-35 at some point in the future.

I second this recommendation - I shoot most of my stuff using the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and it's a fantastic lens. Sharp as hell and it's nice and wide even in the DX sensor.

If you have a camera store locally, check out the 50mm 1.8 STM lens they make. Should be ~$120 or so. It feels "inexpensive" but it is a very sharp lens despite that.

I had the 50L, if you can pick up a good used copy at a reasonable price, do so. Beyond build quality the big difference is flare control and fast, sure AF lock ups. The 50L will capture keepers not only in low light, but in the glare of head lights wide open. Few lens are capable of doing this.
It's reviews aren't stellar, but few make note of this one quality I learned to prize if for. As a low light street shooter this lense excels. I wouldn't hesitate to own it again.

A 50mm prime is a classic focal length and the first prime I would buy. Remember a good prime that's cared for will last a lifetime. Canon offers reasonable repair and calibration services. I've had excellent results from them on lens and cam calibration/repairs.

I'm a Nikon guy, but the L lenses really are great lenses. +1 on picking up a used L if you can swing the cash.

One thing I noticed with Nikon I really like was the viewfinder was a lot easier to do manual focusing with than even my pro body Canon. That pissed me off as manual focus is needed at times in low light, for macros or any time AF isn't cutting it. Even changing the screens on the Canon didn't give as good results as I got with a Nikon as was playing with in low light and it wasn't the top line model at the time. Not sure if that's still true today.

I started with a Canon Powershot A95, then upgraded to a Canon Powershot G11, then upgraded to a Canon 60D, then upgraded to a Nikon D7100, then upgraded to a Nikon D750.

I use a Canon T3i, use either a 50mm prime, or kit lens with cheap wide angle screw on adapter. Also carry a Nikon AW130 point and shoot. It is waterproof, shockproof and sealed against dust, also has GPS tagging. I use it especially when driving around scouting, that GPS feature is nice to help go back to find a place. Also nice to have as a back up if when I get to a place it is raining or dusty , or if I don't want to crawl around with my bigger camera.

Recently dropped my T3i out in New Mexico, without a lens on it. Took me a while to get the inside cleaned out, but broke the screen and there is a crack in the viewfinder. Pictures still come out the same after cleaning, but I might look to getting the latest model within the year, T6i?

Rebel series are good, but not the best. I suggest try and get the 60d/70d/80d if you want some nice photos

Nikon D3200...my first non-point and shoot camera. Have already invested in lenses totaling more than twice the cost of the camera and have only had it for like 13 months. Doesn't have exposure bracketing which sucks and has me contemplating a baby step up to a D3300 in the very near future.

I also bring a Canon PowerShot SX280 HS point and shoot just in case. Had the SX230 which was amazing and lost it...the 280 has a glitch where any time you take video it registers as your battery is almost dead and shuts down But nice having a 20x zoom on a good low light camera in your pocket as a backup and perfect for bringing to sport events and concerts that don't allow "professional" cameras.
