One of the few times scouting has paid off in Ah-Wah (brief)

Yesterday, I went down to Davenport to meet Emma Peel and check out a hole in the wall I had seen on the way through town coming back from the east coast last weekend. On the way down, I headed over to another eastern Iowa town that I had long since dismissed for having any worthwhile abandonments. But to the contrary, a systematic scouting of the town using topo maps, circling potential targets, and playing connect-the-dots with the shortest route between them yielded:

-One small abandoned what looks like a military base, with no inconspicuous place to park for miles
-One tall abandoned grain mill, and its short buddy next door, who was also abandoned
-A couple abandoned schools that looked secure
-About 80 acres of long apartment buildings that look like old military barracks. 1/4 of them are abandoned.
-A few other minor sites, here and there.

There is still hope, out here in the Cornfields.

I met Emma later in the afternoon, and we headed down to the first target for the night - an abandoned downtown 3-story storefront. It looked small, so I didn't think much of it, but once we were inside it was very impressive. One story of abandoned stores, connected by holes in the walls in back, a courtyard surrounded by 3 floors of abandoned windows, and 2 floors of apartments in the perfect state of deterioration where they're still beautiful but you don't quite have to worry about the floors falling through just yet. It was hard to find a way up into the apartment floors, and I doubt that the floor plan would meet fire code these days. We were up on the roof just as it was getting dark, when fireworks started going off directly in front of us. And it was a great show. Not just one at a time, but a constant stream of various fireworks for about 15 minutes. Better than London's new year fireworks, or even the fireworks I saw in Switzerland on their 1000th anniversary. Sometimes the smaller celebrations get the better shows. It was a pleasant surprise.

Then, we headed over to a different town and met Green Jaguar. Over the course of several hours scouting campus and thinking about likely locations, we eventually found a reliable entrance to part of the steam tunnels there. Green Jaguar hit his head really hard outside just as I was going in, and the tunnels were almost unbearably hot, so we opted to save the exploring for another night.
