Pocatello Idaho Area?
< on 12/24/2015 10:53 PM >

Posted on Forum: UER Forum
I am currently visiting family in Pocatello ID for a couple weeks and was wondering if anyone could PM me (not post) about possible locations in the area. I am already familiar with the decommissioned factory that caught fire a few years ago (those of you in the area will be familiar with this building), however a lot of it was burned to the ground and there is actually a business set up there I believe. Anyway, PM me and I might go check out these places with my uncle. I haven't found much online.
Thank you!

No I have researched. I'm looking for places within an hour. Not the places scattered around the state.

Well then why is it that I can find places in Idaho and I'm from New Jersey?

You're right BH. Maybe I should start just giving handouts to anybody who asks.

Because I am still inexperienced with researching. Instead of acting condescending, you could give me tips? I found many places in Idaho too, but they aren't near. Most are ghost towns a hours away, and I don't have time to travel due to what we have planned for next week, so I was just feeling around and asking if anyone could help me out, I didn't hurt anyone. If I was back home, I would have no problem traveling longer, I just can't do that here.

All the more reason to find them yourself. Learn by doing. You have Google Earth and the whole internet more than any of us had 30+ years ago.
Start with RR tracks and rivers. There's always something along RR tracks.
Maybe you'll walk a stretch of tracks for 5 miles and not find much. I've walked RR tracks countless times because it's fun not knowing what you'll find.
That's what exploring is, not knowing and finding new things.

Expecting a prepackaged deal is tourism. Lame.

That place you found was the place I mentioned in the original post (which you'll see I did my best to take down the post since it bothered you guys so much) that got burned down. It also has a railroad car repair shop located in the areas that didn't get burned down, and a guard dog, I wouldn't say it's worth the trip for an empty burned out shell. Boise is also quite a drive from here. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, however I was hoping someone would be kind enough to just give me a hand and I really did not hurt anyone did I? Already scouted out my hometown pretty thoroughly, so please don't excuse me as some lazy kid. I simply do not have time to take out a while day to scout this area, but I'd like to check out a few locations if I can. I see no problem with that. If you don't like me asking once for a handout, then just pass by this thread and don't even pay attention to it.

O'rielly? There's more than one place.
If you were where I am sites be much more scarce and further apart. Your in a garden land of places to explore...WTF? There has to be multiple cool sites along those bloody rails and river... jeeeesze.
Walk them. Look at my first pics here taken from an abandoned elevated RR bridge from deep within it's super structure. No one showed me that.

Don't expect us to hold your hand and want to take warm showers with you. You're up for FM and you should be finding sites without help; creating lame threads like this doesn't help your cause.

Meh, take some pics of that menacing guard dog... that would be an improvement.

Okay, thank you for your help and your elitism. Sorry for being new because obviously you never were new to the hobby.

This technically-illegal hobby is built on trust. Pissy newbies who demand trust generally won't get it. Serious independent explorers who've been posting about their experiences and contributing to the community in a positive way generally will.

Heres the thing. You have 1 picture thread. You make a post about you wanting people to tell you about places near Pocatello, ID and get mad when nobody will. I'm not saying you didnt do any research, but take Blackhawks advice and look along railroad tracks and/or rivers. Go drive around Idaho Falls? Hell go to Flickr and type in Abandoned Idaho or some crap. What do you think i did when I went out there in October?

Naw I didn't care about not getting help. I didn't expect to get any tbh but I thought it was worth a shot. I just got a little butthurt at the condescending attitudes. Thank you for the advice. I now know a bit more about the social accept abilities of this hobby. Hopefully I can contribute more in the future. As you'll see I altered the original post to avoid any more confrontation.

Poke around the forum a bit. Once you understand the hobby and group, you will understand why everyone is protective of locations and not handing out information. There are a lot of tools at your disposal to search for places, google maps is a great one. There are some books available online that can provide you with advice on how to find these locations. Traveling along train tracks, cruising lesser-traveled backroads, meeting with other individuals interested in the hobby, etc.

OK, yes, technically modifying the original post to remove everything is against the forum rules so I'm going to revert it. But certainly that alone is nothing we would ban anyone over...

I think the OP gets the point though. I'm just gonna lock this thread.

And Landser, it's not a huge deal. This happens a lot. This community is very trust-based, and people tend to be wary of sharing locations with strangers online. In future you'll likely have much more success by asking if other local explorers would like to meet up for lunch or something while you're in the area. That gives both parties the opportunity to scope each other out, and then potentially go exploring together after it seems appropriate.
