Picric Acid Factory

In 1917, Glynn County was chosen as the site for construction of a massive factory for the production of picric acid - a vital war material then used in explosives. The government purchased a 2-mile by 3-mile tract and prepared to begin construction work on the $7,000,000 plant. The 5,000 laborers required to build it, and the 6,000 needed to operate it, equaled the area’s then-small population. In November of 1918, just thirty days from scheduled completion of the factory, the war ended and the near-finished factory never opened. Its conversion into peacetime uses never materialized. In the ensuing years most of the factory structures have been torn down, including the twin to the chimney that remains. The lone chimney, from the factory that never was, stands above it all.” (www.glynncounty.com) The lone chimney still standing is found off of exit 36 in Brunswick right off the I-95 on ramp, and is believed by most of Glynn county that it is the only structure still standing from “The Factory That Never Was” however, I’ve found that to be false. To my luck one of my best friends took me to the old picric factory before any of us actually knew what it was, and how they it came about. My first experiences with the picric plant were at a place commonly called ‘the ruins” amongst teenagers in the area. The ruins appear to be completely random, and almost to not make any sense; if you look at it form the perspective that it was suppose to be a building. No one really knew the story behind the plant and everyone assumed it was remnants of a building. I have later been able to find out that the ruins were abandon in the middle of the construction, and were not to suppose be a building at all. According to what little information I’ve been able to obtain it was suppose to be the location of the refinery; a series of stages to allow chemicals to be separated. Also Explain the series of basins located onsite, that look they were built to support large holding tanks. (update I may have found an a old map I was able to obtain through the war department, but I wanna double check before I say for sure. Also Might not have been a refinery.) If what i've found through historical record, there should be underground bunkers/storage in the area. Most of which was probably turned into ponds (I've found one that looks to meet the description). I've also found quite a few "warehouses" (for lack of a better description) in the area that look period correct I need to somehow get around. I've also heard stories of underground tunnels running all the way from the "old turkey farm" to plant Mcmanus. Do not worry, there will be a full write up once I finally have time to explore further, and can get my hands on more information.
