I'm completely new to this forum, but I was lucky enough to be able to take some pictures at Angel Island. The views are stunning and the island full of history. At times it feels straight out of Fallout. These are all from the eastern side of the island (Fort McDowell and the Nike Missile Site).

Yea, there are two ferries: one from San Francisco and one from Tiburon. Both have a limited schedule due to Winter, I believe the SF one runs daily.

If you keep an eye on the weather and catch a good warm winter weekend, i highly suggest trying to grab a camping spot. I caught a 75 degree saturday a few years ago in january and pretty much had the whole island to myself once the last ferry left.

I see a Nike missile mag. Don't tell me it was locked? Or worse flooded?
Where was the command center for it?
Each Nike base plan is different. No two are the same. This was done to prevent easy cookie cutter sabotage. Some had greater levels of security including attack K-9s.

All of the hatches were either soldered or chained. As for the command center, I don't think there was one at this particular one.

Think this magazine has always been chained, though apparently some have gotten in.

The command center was on top of Mount Livermore nearby and has been obliterated. This site had minimal infrastructure probably because it was on a military- garrisoned island instead of somewhere more easily accessible.

Nice explore dashsquared! Angel Island is a great place to poke around, though the rangers have a lot of time on their hands.

While visiting family, I spent a day with a friend on the island in December. I looked over the buildings in Fort McDowell, but have become too practiced in the habit of self preservation. At this time they'd need a more aggressive explorer than me, tho we did stroll into one of them. Still, the hike over the top of Mt. Livermore was great.

If you're planning a trip around this place, check the ferry schedule first, http://www.blueand...erry/angel-island/ . Off-season, there are no scheduled weekday runs. If you miss the last ferry to SF, you're camping.

Very cool. After four years in the Bay, I've only just started exploring the islands - Angel is next. Thanks for the inspiration!

The fences are pretty easy to bypass and since rangers usually don't patrol that much, its pretty easy to get into the buildings.

There's always a command center which has the radar and living quarters for the soldiers. It's usually within 1/8-2 miles of the magazines. Sometimes they are converted into schools, ARMY reserve bases, etc.
Every ring has a Missile Master. Very cool if you can splore one of these. I did.
I hate locked hatches... who knows what's down there? May still have the mag door hydraulics and other seldom seen remnants.

I'd definitely be excited to do an exploring-centric camping trip here some weekend sooner or later. Looks like plenty of places to sleep out of the weather.
If anyone feels keen to join, let me know. I have some camping tools that may come in handy.
Maybe January sometime, unless the skies feel like cooperating and stay clear the weekend after Xmiss.

The island is on reservations all year long, so make sure you secure a campsite online before arriving on the island if you plan to stay overnight.
