I think you would have to take it on a case by case basis. This is a tricky question because there are nuances in an older person/younger person team.

Sometimes when you explore with a younger person they have come with you because they trust your judgement. Even if they dont necessarily realize it, they feel like everything will be ok because youre there. In their mind you know what youre doing and wouldn't let anything go wrong. Which, of course, is impossible to promise. In a case like this I'd feel guilty if I didn't explain the risks as we went along. I don't think you could hold yourself accountable if you are honest about the risks you're taking and feel confident that the person that you're with understands the consequences.

Now, if the person you're bringing has been exploring a bit before and is mature then I can't see why you could find yourself at fault for anything that happens.

Think about whether or not you would trust this person to make the judgement call if you weren't there at all. Are you confident that the person that you're with would make a good decision on their own or do ou feel like they would need guidance? Your only responsibility is honesty.

No minors but other than that age doesn't matter to me. Age is nothing but a number. In my opinion I think that sometimes this hobby bridges generation gaps. I think that is pretty cool. Now with that said I do tend to explore with people that are closer to me in age. For no specific reason. It does make me feel a little better that they usually want to climb or do really physical things. We be older, and wiser and our knees are super crunchy lol.

Closer than you think~ When you dig up the past, you tend to get dirty.

I started exploring when I was 13, and I think as someone so young I tended to make bad decisions such as getting drunk while exploring and going alone. However, now I am glad I started young cause now I have more experience and know what dumb mistakes NOT to do.

I personally don't have an issue with age gaps, as there are such things as immature adults and mature children. The only problem I can see is that if one person is a minor and the other is an adult, if caught, the adult would likely be charged with Child Endangerment (at least in Minnesota). But there are some pretty easy ways of avoiding this, such as entering and leaving 1 at a time.

I am 15 and from my experience 95% of people my age will cause problems. Most people around my age (and from Australia, i'm not speaking for anywhere else) seem to be into it more for the fame and in-fighting rather than actually enjoying themselves. Lots of people my age also seem to value Instagram likes more than locations remaining untouched/accessible, and will post even the most sensitive spots if they think the photo will be popular online. For this reason I usually explore with people older than me.

Im an old guy. Relatively speaking.

Keeping up with the youngers can be somewhat difficult. Old injuries, arthritis. agility. I don't climb, jump and run like I used to.

That being said exploring with younger guys was always inspirational in a way, seeing their sense of wonder and surprise at new discoveries and clever p.o.e. made these happy trips for me.

I avoid exploring with folks who are a lot younger than I am. It's awkward explaining to a police officer what you are doing in an abandoned building with a teenager.

I agree,.. no minors is smart,. no need to get into worse trouble "corrupting" the young.

Course my days of urbexing.. I was a minor,.. back before I knew Urbexing was a thing.

I'm a minor (17, few months away from 18) and to be honest I would think that it's more of a maturity thing. But that's my personal opinion, before anyone tries to start arguing with me or something. I'd take full blame for anything that happens in order to lessen everything on everyone with me, and I could probably pull it off in my state because I'm so close to being 18. I also know that idiots my age often vandalize/break and enter etc but I'm not about that bullshit.

There's a concrete jungle calling my name out there.

I'm old enough now that I get a laugh out of how young people take urbex so seriously.

Actually I used to laugh at the same thing in the 1990's :p

I don't deal with under 18s due to liability & angry parents presuming I'm a weirdo for taking their children into dark dank tunnels that are hidden away from society.

When we started in the summer of 85/6, we were the scene & out average age was 16 ;)

Cheers

Doug

Nice topic and story.

I go exploring with my mom from time to time (yeah, I know). She reciprocates and takes me from time to time. We stick to things that aren't nearly as high risk as some of the locations I have tackled with my husband (same age as me).

My mom's in pretty good shape, so a lot of the physical work out and climbing involved isn't a problem. I relate a lot and have thought about the risk of having another person get hurt during the explore. I would hate to see my mom stuck with criminal charges or physically hurt in any circumstance.

To be honest, exploring has always been a passion in my family, so if she got hurt, it wouldn't necessarily be on my dime alone. She has always understood the consequences of going places you aren't typically supposed to be. Needless to say, at her older age now, it does freak me out though to a certain degree.

Lots of choices and consequences to be weighed in any exploration. This is definitely one of them.

I'm what'd be considered a youngster on here (I'm 19), but I've never really worried about exploring with minors as long as they have a level a maturity and I feel like I can trust them, but that's my general rule for the people I explore with.

Then again, to the extent of my knowledge, there's not any 'child endangerment laws' (that apply to anyone that would be realistically of exploring age) that put me or other age of majority explorers in a bad situation (then again there could be plenty that I'm just not aware of) in my area, so I guess my scenario is a bit different from what a good number of people in this thread seem to be in.

Older explorers seem to have the most interesting stories about their various expeditions, so that's a thing.
