Apart from the issue with underage explorers, I think that having exploring partners with the same focus and mindset is far more important than age. If you are into photography, teaming up with other photographers is much more enjoyable for all involved. If you are into higher, deeper, faster, scarier, then a group of newbies or photographers might not make for the best trip for you.

As a mine explorer, I see the variance of explorer personalities. Some want to touch the wall of the furthest stope as quickly as possible, while others want to dig around in piles of rubble to see what they can find. And as always, the photographers want to photograph. It's all good so long as the teams have the same focus.

Oh yeah, agree about alcohol and/or drugs ahead of time. It can absolutely ruin a trip.

As a minor I've never really bumped into problems here, I have explored with some other adults and everything was fine. I think as fiftyone_eggs said, it's the maturity level. I believe I'm on the more mature end of things as I've ran my own business and can connect with most adults well. But I will say I've taken some of my friends exploring before, I have some that are younger than me and are great, and others that I'll never take again.

As long as the person is over 18 and willing to take on full responsibility for their well-being, I have no issues. Of course, I would rethink it if they appear to be an irresponsible explorer in general.

Minors are a big no, because I would not like even the slightest risk of endangering them.

Exploring with minors?
My "professional" answer is no. My honest answer is "yes", but ONLY with my family (as I've done in the past).
My 2 oldest sisters (I'm the oldest of four children/one is 19 and the other is 14) go with me on exploration adventures. We have it all worked out if authorities show up: The youngest one will take the blame, meanwhile, my 19 y/o sister and I are the ones "out looking for her because she's acting up, having a fit, and going down the wrong path in life. We're trying to bring her back home."

Okay, that is pretty slick on your part, and I applaud your ingenuity.

I don't think so because they are going to do it either way, so I would rather be there to protect them from any potential harm and dangers that can arise from UE.

That's pretty smart. When I explore with anyone in general, we tend to have a thing where one of us pretends to not speak english and the other one is mentally handicapped. My little really gets into the retarded roll, people would be surprised how fast cops back away when someone is speaking broken english and the other is drooling, speaking gibberish, and trying to pull their pants down to pee on the nearest tree/wall.

You've got awesome siblings.

Hey, Flashy, to each their own! I DON'T think that would work out very well here in Texas, then again, we are a friendly state. I have, however, heard that you "cannot" get arrested if you're drunk while having to "I really need to go poop, Ociffer[sic]. Does your police car have 2 ply toilet paper?"

I hope we explore together one day when I return to California, or if you make it to the South first

Hahahaha I just imaged someone trying to pull down their pants while pretending to be drunk. That's pretty funny, but I'd assume Texas would just shoot anything that moves at that point. I think if I tried that here in California I'd be taken in for a drug test.

Same to you! If I ever am your way, I'll let you know. Flattered you'd want to explore with me

Age differences going upward is irrelevant. I've explored with 50-60 year olds and have had no issues at all. They are easy to relate to and there's no problem with dynamics.

On the other end of the spectrum I've found difficulties with younger explorers such as dynamics (just not being able to appreciate the hobby, lack of respect, naivety).

The best explorations I've had are with the older crowd - less drama, they stick to the hobby and avoid the shit talk. The younger ones like to focus on the shit talk and focus less on actual dynamics of the positive interactions between explorers.

Just my opinion.

No minors.

This is my rule. My 23 cousin got into some shit when he was with a 17 year old just because there is a curfew in their town. He had to spend the whole night in jail and they charged him with "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" or some bullshit. I would also imagine that it's really hard to talk your way out of a situation if you're a minor because in the eyes of the law you'd be "setting a bad example"

I started out this hobby at like, 15 or 16. NO ONE wanted to go exploring with me (understood, 'cause I was a minor) now that I'm of legal age I've explored with a few members. But most of them are like late 20's early 30's, so close to or over a decade older than I am. I'm still the 'baby explorer' most of the time.

Not an issue with me, although I think a lot of explorers avoid exploring with me because I am still pretty young.

I am 41. I used to take my sons, but now one is 18, and the other is close. They both want to become police officers, so its a no-go. I have a couple of explorer buddies, ages between 25 and 30. No issues there. We act appropriately, and have a good time.

First off, let me start by saying I'm just now turning 21 in a few days, so I'm a young dude on here. I've been doing this since I was a kid, literally around the age of seven.

I agree with the people saying to avoid minors. The legal issues aren't so much my concern as is the nature of younger people. I've seen teenagers come into a beautiful building and destroy it. Graffiti on the walls, broken windows, stolen objects, etc. The simple fact is that young people rarely have respect for the whole point of UE.

At the same time I have met teenagers who have a great deal of respect for places. I've seen many who research the entire history of the site and work to preserve its history. Not every young kid is an idiot, but I'd be wary of those with a lack of experience.

That's my policy too. Otherwise, doesn't matter to me.

Man that's exactly my feelings on the situation. To me if they are 18-21 or above that is when I think they should go into dangerous situations. Not saying they shouldn't explore, just leave the dangerous shit for when you have more experience. Just my opinion though, people are gonna do what they want anyway.

Explored more when I was under 19 than over 19. Started when I was 15 years old, went to Toronto meet ups. Not a lot of people asked my age, they just assumed I was older. So if you don't want to be responsible for minors, you should probably ask everyone their age, even if they are a girl! I'm 23 now, and explore way less now. Combination of being busy all the time, and less in the mood to sustain injury...

Thanks to all the Toronto explorers who didn't ask! I remember being onsite while security circled the outside of an abandoned building we were all in. I was like "Oh, hah, you guys know I'm 16, right?". The plan was to enact the infamous "hide the minor if security or police" show up. Thanks.

As for older, I love exploring with whoever will take me. Though I've been with some older people who would get tired out, not too much fun. I liked hanging out with the crazy 20 year olds who would climb stuff with me. I do not like exploring with minors, immature brats, or anyone willing to break locks and fuck around.

Badassery doesn't stop for a number, so apart from the legality issue, I don't see why age would matter.

But, like a lot of you all, I don't explore with minors. The only exception is my brother.

I can't say much about exploring, since I haven't had the luxury of having a group of people to explore with yet, but I know with BMX age really doesn't matter. I have a good group of 4 other guys that I go on roadtrips with to go riding and the ages range from 15 to 26, and there are no issues between any of us. I think BMX would be comparable to exploring, as both are dangerous and illegal at times.

I'm 41, and a good friend of mine is 22.

Together we've been exploring a site repeatedly outside of Olds, Alberta, Canada.

When we go, I don't feel it's a leader-follower thing at all.

I would say that when a group of people goes, it's equal risk/responsibility all around. Chronological age shouldn't even come into the equation.

What should come into the equation are things like ability, and a plan (such as everyone stick together, single file, etc). Phone numbers should be shared among everyone so that in the event of disaster (or inconvenience), everyone can co-ordinate as best they can.

I agree that it's more about maturity than age, at least from a safety standpoint. One of my friends that I'll go exploring with is 17, but I've known her long and well enough to usually trust her judgment implicitly. I'd much rather take her along than my 20-30 something fratboy-ish friends.

Really?

Not sure what is confusing about that. I explored with older people when I was a minor, people didn't ask my age. Now that I am not a minor, I realize that I don't want to be responsible for endangering one. I was stupid, I should have let people know my age. Darn kids and all!

I'm okay with being a bit of a hypocrite. ;)
