So, I played hooky and checked this place out. From Google Earth, it looked to be some kind of odd compound, and def derelict. One sunny Friday, I drove waaay out in the middle of bumfu*k nowhere to take bad pictures with my burner cell phone. I was expecting maybe an old ranch of some kind.

Man was I wrong : )

I don't want to tip off the location too much, so I'll just say that this is a former inmate fire camp in the hills above [redacted] next to [redacted] It was in pretty good shape, and there was some indications that the property is still active as an ag site of some kind. All of the camp buildings are vacant however. Very cool to check out, and a great trip into the suburbs of the middle of nowhere. 1.

I'm not entirely sure. The ammo cans and the military paint are just surplus. The paint was still wet, but it smelled like something that would really mess you up if you breathed it too long. That entire building was a also a paint booth, so maybe the explosives shack was just where they keep the flammable stuff per government regulations. That same building had a bunch of tree climbing gear in it also. I had a real hard time seeing all of that vintage climbing gear just going to waste on the floor! That was the same room where the ammo can was. I have a friend who works in forestry, and he said that they still have old ammo cans and other military surplus in use.

That was actually some kind of strip wood finish that was slowly peeling off the wall. I'm still kicking myself for not taking my DSLR out there with me. That shot would make a great phone wallpaper ;)

Probably should double-check your efforts to conceal the location. Took me all of 10 seconds to find this place.

That's seriously so cool! Thanks for sharing! I'd play hookie to go here, too. Stuff like this you could just chill all day at.

Yeah, I could have hidden it better. There is one giveaway that I didn't really want to cut from the pics.

I don't know of you could kick it there all day. Just above the camp buildings there are other new structures with signs of daily visitation and upkeep.

My trick for most rural sites is to go in the middle of the day on a weekday. That way, you run less of a risk of seeing ranchers doing the daily check of their property. Assuming that they did their checks in the morning or evening.

I might put it in the LDB. Its really not hard to find and I could see that I wasn't the first person there.

As you can see in the pics though, the current occupants like their target practice : ) Bring running shoes

Damn, these are amazing! I'm glad someone was able to get out there and take better pics. My trip was pure impulse, so I only had mt cell phone with me. That peeling wooden wall was the best, and I love your perspective on the main dorm room.

What's your workflow for the building exterior shots? Since I actually started using my DSLR, my exposures always seem to be blown out on the lighter parts.

Also, was there anyone up at the top buildings when you were there? I saw evidence that the place gets visited by the owners pretty often. I was sneaking around there like the world's most awkward ninja : )

Shoot in Manual mode is about the best easy advice I can give, find the balance you like, play with your settings. What I post are some of my favorites out of probably 100-150 shots.

Yeah that upper level you can see where they go up there and take their kids, bar b que, even have the hooks for hanging what they catch to skin and prep it. The fridge full of fire ball and stuff was awkward, and the swimming pool lol.

Funny part is we get there and I have the "exploration shits" hit, so I have to go find a good place and take my napkins....... Later the girlfriend was like "Noooooo I gotta use the bathroom!!!"... Well right after that we stumble upon that upper area with the bathroom they recently built with tile floor, shower, hot water, new toilet, toilet paper, air freshener lol.... After I had to find a bush!

I'm getting there. I have been transitioning from program mode for the last couple of months. My short attention span can't handle all of those settings at once.

Yeah that upper level you can see where they go up there and take their kids, bar b que, even have the hooks for hanging what they catch to skin and prep it. The fridge full of fire ball and stuff was awkward, and the swimming pool lol.

For the sake of deniability, I avoided the top portion totally. My thinking was that if I was just in the abandoned parts, then they might be less mad if they found me. Neurotic, I know...

I thought I was the only one who got "explorer shits"! They hit me the worst when I'm wandering around junk yards, "Oooh, a Buick Grand National! Hrngh, be right back..."
