3rd of August, 2004: Random Thoughts & Changes

Haven't really updated this in a while, as I've been busy of getting the Krakow pictures to my site and now that the weather seems to be getting ok, for the first time during the whole summer, I've been exploring/photographing during the day.

That actually leads to the second thought that I wanted to write here. I've stated it now several times, but visiting the death camps really changed something inside of me. It also changed something for this hobby...

Not just the death camps, but visiting several historical sites, changed some fundamental ideas in me that relate to UE. I just don't find too much interest anymore to explore some industrial buildings, residential houses etc...
Before that trip, I never came to realize, that the Finnish history and the history of the nearby areas can also be very fascinating. Visiting the book store after that trip, I spent from my nearly non-existent funds a good portion, to buy a book that tells the history of "King's Road", the road that's existed from the 14th/15th century, to the present day, leading from Turku to Vyborg.

Very interesting book and tells a stories from many places, that I've never noticed or known before.

So most likely, I'll be shifting my "exploration" targets to a bit more historical sites. Those perhaps cannot be stated anymore as explorations, but it's something that I want to do and that's what matters. Of course, being a curious person, if an open door invites me to some abandoned building, do you think I could resist the temptation?

Other than that, about a week ago, I received an email from a researcher in STAKES (The National Research and Development Centre for Welfare and Health) who asked permission to use the photographs from the Toxic Suburb of Alakiventie, in his presentation in Bristol UK during this Autumn.

I gave the permission and sent a bigger images to him. Hopefully I get to see the presentation in internet or then just in photographs.

I'm also looking forward the EU-OPEX in Glasgow as well as starting my work in few weeks. God knows that I could use the money quite soon...

He wanted the pictures 2, 13 & 19, without any editing to them, like B&W, sepia etc. Additionally I sent him two extra pictures taken from the stairs, that are not in my web site.

It was quite nice, it felt like I've accomplished something now. Something that was the reason to start this whole thing. To document places, so that they might be a benefit for people.

Although, when I first saw the email address and started to read the email, I started to sweat as my first thought was: Shit, it's from official bureau...I'm in trouble!
