We spent hours exploring Treasure Island. There was so much to see. I managed to get inside one building, and posted the footage in a different thread. Here are a whole bunch of pics I took while walking around the desolate roads.

Are you referring to the two asterisk-shaped buildings? I did get a couple pics of them, but they didn't look all that great when compared to the bird's eye views I've seen in other posts.

I really wanted to explore them, but could find no access point. I wasn't too disappointed though because there was so much else to see. It's an incredible place.

I was just reading an interview a criminal psychologist had done with his murderer. It was a very strange and sad situation, apparently not at all motivated by homophobia.

The TI barracks are cool for their design, but pretty much just rekt otherwise.

Alameda is boring design but a lot of interesting stuff still inside

Wasn't Harvey Milk's assassination inspired by the destruction of Jonestown in November of 1978?

I've never heard that before. As I understand it, Milk took his future-assassin's job in the city government and because of that, he killed Milk.

Harvey Milk was assassinated by Dan White on November 27, 1978. The Jonestown Massacre under Jim Jones occurred on nine days earlier on November 18, 1978. Jones' The People's Temple was originally from San Francisco, and was a political force interacting with local movers and shakers including SF Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk. However they moved to Guyana from San Francisco in 1976 after allegations of abuse and preformed the mass suicide after assassinating Congressman Leo Ryan of San Mateo (current Congresswoman Jackie Speier was shot but survived).

As far as I can tell, it was just an odd coincidence, as social conservative Dan White already had his Twinkie troubles (http://en.wikipedi...ki/Twinkie_defense) and certainly would have little to do with the libertarian/communist People's Temple. Still, there are the usual conspiracy theories, linking Jim Jones to CIA/Soviet/whatever mind control experiments, and other bullshit.

Fair enough. I just remembered reading about both incidents and how they were (allegedly) linked.

I lived there for several years in the 1970s as a kid...recently we were told that we were exposed to "abnormal" amounts of radiation. Underneath base housing was buried unknown types & quantities of radioactive waste; a contractor hired to either tear down or rehab the housing units found extremely high levels of radioactivity, and the area is supposed to be off-limits as a Hazmat area now. Haven't been back there to confirm it though.

It seems odd that it would be radioactive, as the only nuclear material the Navy or US Govt used in the vicinity would have been in medical devices, but none of those would be strong enough to emit the radioactivity levels detected as being buried beneath the base housing units. No known military nuclear waste was recorded in the area at levels high enough to register the levels being reported there.

Anyone else have anything more detailed/current than this? Thanks in advance.

As far as I know, the corner of the island where Austin Hall and the Sewage Treatment plant is was once was the docking area for the "USS Pandemonium" which the Navy did radioactive "spill" clean up testing with substances like cesium, radium and plutonium similar to the likes of Hunters Point.

"Operation Crossroads" which was the first detonation of a nuclear bomb in the bikini atoll was the cause for numerous radioactive contaminated warships, some of which were brought back to various Naval bases in the Bay Area (Hunters Point, Mare Island, Treasure Island) and were later cleaned.

So now if you walk on the corner of T.I you will see workers remediating the radioactive dirt. There are massive piles of it covered in a green chemical which helps prevent it blowing in the wind to the houses not 100 yards away....!

Heres a whole bundle of info:
