I found a similar steam tunnel under one of the medical buildings. I think most of the old buildings do have them.
But now I'm trying to find access to the longer, networked steam tunnels. There are some new ones that run under University Ave. Right now (Summer 2015) they're building the new SUB and have the man-holes to this long steam tunnel open, all day. However, they actually pay a guy just to sit there so adventurous types like me dont go down....
The man-hole covers have an elaborate 'pressure seal' setup of a few black and yellow bars on their underside.... very impressive and expensive, I'm sure. Makes me doubt my vague plan of prying them open with a pry-bar....
I talked to one of these 'security guards', who was sitting in his chair beside the open steam tunnels. I looked down. Definitely a long tunnel, runs all the way down University for sure. They also had an 'advertising map' up (showing the 'renovated' steam system) which showed a much larger network than I before suspected. The guard told me that it was a big network, to his knowledge, but that he hadn't been down there.
"I just dont get it. Why would you want to go down there?" he asked of me, generally.
"It's fun to explore. Go places you're told you can't go"
"Yeah I get that... but why down there?"
"I don't know --- it's the same as why I go on rooftops, here. It's about the sense of exploration, adventure--"
"--- Yeah, I like rooftops, too. But why down there? It's sixty degrees down there. We can only have guys down there for 15 minutes"
"Yeah, I'll be honest with you, that just makes me want to go, more."
