Manholes are a poppin'! entry by autowitch 7/30/2004 6:18 AM
This post will be a bit of a mess - it's been an exciting night.
We has a little bit of excitement in my neighborhood this evening when there was a series of underground explosions close to my house (I'm just outside of the evacuated area). It looks like it was a methane explosion in a sanitary line. There's a bit more to it than that. Two or three days ago, they had an accident while cleaning up an old (?) shop right over where the explosions took place this evening. The accident involved spilling around 300 gallons of some pretty nasty chemicals (hydrochloric acid and sodium cyanide ware a couple that I heard that stuck out in my mind).

I popped by the explosion site the next morning. They had cleaned up the site pretty well by then, but were still keeping people away. Not much to photograph I'm afraid. I did notice that one of the manholes that they were working on had a collar laying next to it. I'm not sure what all they were doing. They had a lot of equipment around.
I went back a few days later and it was like nothing had happened at all.
