Traveled over 1,000 miles in a little over 24 hours to the Mojave Desert and back under the full moon.

For my first trip to the desert I ended up finding long forgotten giants, smiling quietly in death.

I love this so much. There's not enough plane appreciation on this site.

I actually was trained to fly a 1943 Grumman F6F Hellcat years ago, my grandfather was in the air force and we bonded over aircrafts and taking over the sky. I'd love to visit these.

Okay Calvin, You now have the biggest props from me ever by going out to these birds! Being an avid aviation person/ military photography, and wreck chaser, you just pulled off an epic shoot in my eyes lol

Snoopy there has been on my list to shoot for awhile, but im not ballsy enough to go out without permission on that site lol

And that second B-52 I am sure you know was blown in pieces as part of a nuclear arms treaty with Russia, they saw it on a satellite images and requested ti be destroyed lol

Flashy Fashion..... if you are remotely into the War Birds and Aviation, maybe you should follow my stuff on FB ;) I happen to run a War Bird site, and spend lots of time shooting and documenting them, working hand in hand with the owners and museums ;)

You got a page? What's your website? I'd love to follow you. That is severely epic, I'd love to check that out. An uncle of my adopted mother's is in the Air and Space Museum in D.C. We're a family of aviators, I try to go to air shows and help with maintenance and restoration of privately owned warbirds and fighter planes in Sonoma when I can.

Nice work Calvin. Glad you made it down there. I like your #2 and #4 the best. Looks like you guys had perfect skies. On night 1 we had a massive haboob (dust storm) with 40+ mph winds blowing sand near horizontally. Good skies, but crappy conditions for expensive cameras and eyeballs. Second night, dead clear. It was a tough spread. Noel Kearns gets a big thanks for sharing this place with me.

I read about this location about a year ago, but it was from a different angle and it didn't trigger as "possible" so I considered it purely entertainment rather than potential photography fodder:
http://bldgblog.bl...ation-targets.html

We got to a few more planes than just the B-52s but that's about all I can say about that. Do your research.

I'm trying to find the inspiration to process the rest of the pics. I wish I went with more closeups...

Wonderful.

I've wanted to night shoot these for years. Since that piece appeared on the web about 10 years ago, made by the guys that went out here on motocross bikes. It was just daylight snapshots. Nice to see people going out here taking real pictures. Particularly yours freeside, very nice.

It's the parking that always left me hanging. Where do I leave my car? Surely the AF patrols the road on such an active base?

There are other similar sites in AZ and NV, but the aircraft types are less rare and compelling. And their parking issues are even worse because they're off much more heavily traveled roads than this place.

You are such a bad liar.

Jetpacks ...

We used our Jetpacks. (With "Whisper Mode" -same technology used for both Blue Thunder as well as Airwolf.)

Everything mentioned about the security and caution required should be taken seriously. But also, beware the mad crazy pack of giant coyotes. They tracked us in and then waited for us to come back the same way we came, howling together the entire time we were shooting.

As Freeside mentioned, Thanks to Noel Kerns for the intel. As well as you Free for helping us out a little bit too.

We all shared the radio, I used QOTSA (SFTD) to ease into "Sky Valley" and if I remember correctly I may have also squeezed in some Danzig II too.

Yeah, I talked to Noel about this a few months ago, but really don't want to leave a car on the roadway. I have a plan that won't leave a car exposed . . .

Everything mentioned about the security and caution required should be taken seriously.

Was anything about security and caution actually mentioned in this thread? What did I miss?

But also, beware the mad crazy pack of giant coyotes. They tracked us in and then waited for us to come back the same way we came, howling together the entire time we were shooting.

Humans are way to big to eat (provided we're ambulatory), so there shouldn't be anything to worry about there. They just enjoy the full moon as much as I do. Personally, I love 'em.

This isn't my first dance with this stuff, I think I'll be ok.

Well there you go, pal.

I can’t wait to see your shots from here, with all the colors of the rainbow, almost as if the moon crapped Lifesavers and Skittles from the sky.

I prefer the expression "Clown Vomit" please.

Honestly, I'll probably keep the lights pretty minimal to not attract attention.
