When scouting goes bad

Myself, Wolfman, Charlie, and a bunch of our friends went camping to our favourite camping spot last weekend. We knew there was a mine up there that was either abandoned or recently re-activated. We went up in two trucks, and a little ways before you have to stop for a gate, a family in a Cherokee stopped our friends behind us and told them we should leave, that there's no trespassing up there and that they would call the police and blah blah [mind your own business] blah. Though my friends said nothing back, they waited behind the gate unsure how much a bunch of assholes the family was so, me, Wolfman, and Charlie went up to see what we could see.

Hiking for about twenty minutes we came upon a camp with several small buildings. One had a generator going, a computer screen on, and an un-interested dog, so we assumed someone was in there even though we never saw anyone. We walked on the road past the camp and followed an unused side road. After ten minutes we found the bottom where there was an unused and sealed entry shaft. Tired and not wanting to keep going we headed back, and our friends left and wrote us a note saying they would go to a nearby waterfall. Driving back down the logging road is when the fun began.

From the back of Wolf's truck I saw a Suburban almost t-bone us at an intersection. When Wolf slid to a stop I saw a guy come from a parked GMC pick-up with a C-7 machine gun pointed at us (think M-16) with sniper's bi-pod, tactical rail grip, and scope. The two guys in the Suburban jump out with Smith & Wesson 45 auto's drawn telling us to put our hands up. It took me a couple seconds and them telling me twice to put my hands up did I finally do so realizing they were RCMP, even though they didn't identify themselves as police which they are required to do, and only one of the three had a full uniform.

When we all got out the one covering me tells me to get to my knees and handcuffs me. I'll tell you kneeling on gravel for ten minutes is not comfortable. Wolfman is then handcuffed but remains standing, while Charlie is not handcuffed standing wearing a pink bikini top. We told them the truth (more or less), that we went up to look at the mine, saw the buildings, so we left. I brought camo pants, two flashlights, binoculars, and other gear in a bag. The officer asks me what they were for and I told them they were for camping and we were not sure if we would be back before dark (hence the flashlights). He asks me why should he believe me, and not having anything smart-ass to say, and not wanting to be taken to prison, I told him " because that's what happened." Meanwhile they were searching everywhere in the truck, not even cleaning up after themselves, and running all our names through the computer.

We weren't sure if someone in the mine camp saw us or if the nosey family called the police, but after they took off our handcuffs, which mine were very tight, they told us they were looking for two guys in a white Jeep that were shooting at people in the area, and something about someone getting slashed (we were two guys and a girl, in a dark blue pickup). Because Wolf also had on camo pants, they told us the only people that were up there wearing camoflage were police or people with marijuana grow-ops. Again biting my tongue wanting to say "where does that leave us then", we left not saying a word to them. They did thank us for cooperating, and kind of apologized, but I thought they could have handled the situation a bit better even though i'm sure they were justified in what they did considering the circumstances.

While we were back at camp, our friends in the other truck came back and told us they were stopped too but were treated a bit better than us. They weren't hancuffed but were stopped at gunpoint, searched, and ID'ed. One of my friends was riding in the rear of the pick-up with a beer in one hand and a smoke in the other, while another friend, with University education mind you, asked the officer if his rifle was real. The officer just shook his head and walked away. Another group of friends that were driving up to meet us were not allowed to enter the park at the entrance to the logging road for three hours before being allowed through. It seemed we were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and gave us a story to tell for some time to come.

Wow,

what a great story, I bet it got your old hart pumping at the time. I'm glad it all worked out for you.

Pretty exciting, like you said, a story to tell again and again.

Actually I was pretty level-headed and calm. What bothered me was their lack of following procedure in that instance, and singling only me out to kneel on gravel with shorts on. They could have been more professional. But I guess things are tense when they get a gun call.
