Over twenty different locations and two weeks of travelling behind and I must say that my head is completely empty...
The only thing that I really can think of, is the concentration camps of Auschwitz I, Auschwitz II and Plaszow where American and Turkish volunteers were digging up a Jewish cemetery, that was destroyed by the Nazis. While we were talking with them, I started to look around and realized, that I already was standing on top of one grave...the field was full of small mounds, underneath of every mound, there is gravestones, destroyed...
According to the American man, there is only a very small chance of actually identify who is lying in the grave, as the headstones are destroyed completely, with only one piece from a headstone uncovered so far, that has a name on it.
Auschwitz I & II are sad and huge places, but I'm sorry to say that those feel more like a tourist attractions than anything else, people smiling and posing in front of gas chamber, fences and gates...even nuns. People destroying the barracks and paintings made by prisoners, by scratching their names on them, people are disgusting. It's really hard there to grasp what the places were sixty years ago.
Plaszow on the other hand, even when it's just a meadow, where local people now take their dogs to "do their thing" is a much more shocking place, or at least it affected me much more than Auschwitz.
Perhaps the contrast of local people taking their dog for a walk and foreign people digging up a Jewish cemetery was the thing that affected me in a way, that no other thing in my life has been able to affect so far...
