Death underground
entry by Macsbug

This is in part some stuff I have thought of over the last few months, and in response to a thread, where somebody has a worry or fear of bodily harm while entering a storm drain.

I have been in a couple of drains, some more then once, or in different places. I have never had any fear of being harmed while underground, but after some thinking about a certain draining trip, I realized I should have been a lot more scared.

The trip:

We were in a drain we had never been in before, going from upstream downwards, with few exits (even fewer of which were accessible) and no knowledge of what lay ahead of us. We ended up at the top of a waterfall, with a large bar across the top, so we could not fall, unless we were to try.

However, it was a long ways there, in water deep enough (high ankle, low knee, maybe) to slow you down. What I have thought about since the trip is "what if". I never thought about it before, but I read somebody's post here which said something about the danger of drains flash-flooding from water running from a fire scene. Yeah, this drain is located downstream from a place where they do practice fires. (Which would be a reasonable explanation for why it is so huge). What if they had a practice fire, or it started raining? Would we be able to make it to an exit in time, or be swept over the waterfalls to our death? What if it started to rain, and we could not make it in time? Or there was one who couldn't keep up and was left behind? What would I do, or say?

Anyways, we all made it safe and sound, and odds are we could do it a hundred more times, and still be o.k., but there's always that risk, and while I may not mind risking having to run, or swim out into the Mississippi, I do mind risking being swept over a waterfall to my death, or having others end up that way. I learned how important it can be to start from downstream in many cases, to be aware of possible exits (or lack thereof) and just being aware of when it is a pretty safe situation and when it isn't. I learned a distinction between being hundreds of feet underground, and being at hardly no risk at all, and conversely being only a couple of feet underground, and being in a much riskier situation.

All in all, it was a learning experience, we are all safe.
