Posted by Therrin Or do you just mean, up to the point that you CAN give an xpg the same amount of current?

The XP-G doesn't overdrive as well as the XM-L. That's partly due to thermal considerations. The SST50 and SST90 have lower efficiency than Cree's best, but they can be run at much higher currents. If you take an XM-L up to about 4 amps, no practical design lets you see any benefit from much more current. The light output will not increase much on a lab bench, and the heat in a flashlight will cut XM-L output dramatically in use over about 4 amps.
The SST50 and SST90 are rated and see benefit to about 5 and 9 amps each. So IF your driver can kick amps that hard, then you can get really monster output in a given-size light. The single-LED offerings from Cree top out at about 1000 LED lumen in a good installation. The SST90 can get up to 2200... At about 3x the current. But that's almost doubled output and throw, so it has its draw.
OF course, these are big LEDs which need big optics.
