15th of June, 2004: UE, A Part-Time Hobby?

After thinking again about this journal and my "excuse" of using Av's resources, rather than my own, I started to think again how I even started this hobby.

Yes, my excuse was time, or the lack of it. In the beginning, two years ago, Abandoned Places as I knew this hobby then, was meant to be just a part-time hobby for me, something I would do now and then if I would feel like it. What I didn't realize then was that this hobby would suck me in completely.

I've always been interested about history and I thought that exploring abandoned places, would be a great extension for that hobby. Of course it is, but what I didn't realize back then, was that it would also be a hobby that's very time consuming if you really dig it.

So now I'm still collecting stamps, postcards, documents and generally speaking paper stuff from Germany (please take a look at the site first, before you mention anything about Neo-Nazis) which is also a very time consuming hobby. On top of that comes Urban Exploration.

So how does that take any time other than the actual exploring? Well quite soon after photographing and exploring the very first places, I got more and more interested about urban development issues, meaning that what's being renovated, what's being demolished and generally speaking, what's happening in the city where I live and in the nearby areas.

I also constantly read about different places in Finland and abroad and so that I wouldn't forget the collector side of me, my collection of different news articles of various urban issues is constantly growing. Also planning the summer trip, which after this summer is starting to become a tradition, takes quite a lot of time. On top of that comes the planning of different explorations a bit further away, be it in Estonia or few hundred kilometers to North...I just hate to trust on chances...

So, sooner or later one of the hobbies needs to go, perhaps not completely, but I just cannot afford the time to do everything...
