13th of June, 2004: The Bronze Age Grave

Bronze Age grave, that's what the map said. Interesting enough, I decided to go and see it, even when I already knew what to expect.

It had been raining two days in a row, but finally on Sunday it stopt raining and I packed the camera back and headed to the wooden area outside of Helsinki, with my scooter. Finding the actual place was a bit difficult, like it always is when you're trying to find something spesific from the woods. I drove back and forth a small sand road, expecting to find some sort of sign to guide me to the grave area. No sign was to be found and I tried asking about the location from few people that were walking there, but they seemed surprised that there's suppose to be any Bronze Age graves in the area. Good enough, I decided to abandoned my scooter near the woods and went on hiking.

After climbing on top of a hill, I finally found what I was looking for: A pile of rocks...
Yes boys and girls, that pile of rocks was the grave. Nothing fancy about the grave itself, but the idea that someone was buried nearly a 4 000 years ago here, got shivers going in my spine. There's just something special on the places that have a long history behind them, history that cannot be found from any abandoned building. I actually like these places a lot more, than any "modern" buildings.

After climbing on top of the grave, in the distance about few kilometers away, I saw the medieval village...under a Vuosaari harbour construction project. The village, even when not visible to the eyes, has been there under the soil for 600 years. It has survived that long, but now, now came the new Vuosaari Harbour, which destroyed it completely. 600 years and now it's buried under the freeway and no archeologist will ever get to see it again, not to even mentioning ordinary people.

Vuosaari Harbour has actually destroyed a lot more than that. The roads and railroads goes through a preservation area and also very close to part of the Viapori fortification ring. Most likely the caves that are located there will survive, but when I was there a year ago, the road construction work was very close to the trench line, which are not reinforced with concrete and so most likely will be destroyed...even when those are also protected...

But that something survived 600 years...and now...
