Catch-22

When you see a site in such poor condition as this one, you know it isn't going to be around long. I think we may have missed this ones prime.

This dumping grounds for locals also serves as a filthy spot to cook up some meth or to destroy some nice rusty siding. It served many purposes during it's lifetime. Because of its current state of decay the owners have accrued some hefty fines and the city has ordered them to tear it down. The owners are in turn, suing the city claiming that the fines are unreasonable. Plans have been approved to build affordable housing in it's place, but first everyone has to finish suing each other. Multiple hearing dates are scheduled for the next few months to determine the scheduled fate of this site. It will be torn down soon, it's only a matter of time. It is in the database for your exploring pleasure.

These were all taken with my point and shoot

Great shots, Alice. It looks like this is going the way of Fleishhacker.

But I can always find something to like about the dramatic lighting you can find in an industrial site. I'll definitely be making a visit soon.

Thank you for such wonderful compliments guys! TRUE, you make me *blush*

I think it's funny how obvious it is that I don't pay much attention to graffiti in my shots. I all too often cut off a letter. To me it's just a bunch of colors and I can rarely even tell what it says. But when there is water, boy do those colors reflect!

Love all of these shots. I'm typically a graffiti-hater but this place interesting enough to check out. However, did not see in DB. Have I gone full-blown retard?

DtEW and I made a stop here after work today. I think this place is in worse shape now than when Alice was there. We also ran out of light, so we may have missed stuff. Met "Greg" by the way.....LOL we speculated that he was a scrapper looking for good stuff, but he sure knew his way around the place.....AND, he didn't eat us, so that's always a plus! This place was fun as the light got low......

it's a good spot when the sun is still up for 60-90 minutes. Once it's close to the horizon, it gets dark fast.

"rays of light" is awesome!! You made this place look nice! When madcap and I went it was very eerie and quiet. Not a soul there. Did it look like Greg was living there?

No, he wasn't living there. But he creeped up on DtEW really well. we were freaked out for a bit, but I asked him how to get in to the building with the green glass in the upper windows and he shimmied in and then raised a garage door for us! I guess these experiences are part of exploring and a reason why I don't like to do it alone. Greg was 100% nice, but sooner or later, I expect to run in to someone who knows the value of what I'm carrying on my back and needs quick cash and that's why I prefer to explore with friends!

Seedy is in the lower-right of the frame for scale. Seedy is really about 2' tall. No, not really. ;)

Untitled by dtewsacrificial, on Flickr

Greg getting the drop on us freaked me out *a bit*, to say the least. We were in the darkness of the office. We were pretty deep inside, and I was just looking at seedy shooting those shelves and the hole in the ground. A disembodied voice wafted out from some direction...

"Don't worry, I'm the good guys... actually, I'm not the good guys... but not the bad guys..."

I whip around to him being right behind me. I feel for the 4" folder that isn't in my pocket, where it's normally supposed to be. So much for the security blanket. I take a few steps back, but I really couldn't go anywhere since I couldn't see a thing, and I knew there were hole(s?) in the ground.

Greg turned out to be a nice guy though, and I guess he had as much to fear from us as we did from him.

Untitled by dtewsacrificial, on Flickr

So according to him, Greg is not a random scavenger, but somebody who had something to do with both the site and the owners. I don't know how much this can be believed, but after the um... concerning approach in the office, me and seedy decided that we weren't going to stray far from each other. Well, that lasted all of a couple of minutes, as it's probably easier herding cats than photographers after that prime perspective/shot.

Untitled by dtewsacrificial, on Flickr

Anyways, Greg had disappeared somewhere down the end of the Emerald Warehouse, and that concerned me. So in my infinite wisdom, I went looking for him. He had disappeared from what I thought was a dead end. Wait, no he didn't. He was crawling along the crossbeams about 30-or-so-feet off-the-deck. He came down and told me he was going to take the gears off the overhead crane for use on his barge (seedy and I had later discussion on whether Greg could possibly have a barge). He was going to use the cables to lower the 2-3ft diameter cast-iron gears onto a modified trailer (I didn't see it, but he took pains to describe it). And then he disappeared again.

There's a Chinese proverb that says, "if you walk the night roads often enough, you will run into a ghost."

Well, guess we did.

Thanks, FastEddy! I thought this was going to be a fast-and-easy explore... low-hanging-fruit, if you will. But like Flesh Hucking, it kinda metamorphosed into something other than that. That's urbex for ya.

Interesting.

I visited a month or two ago. It was fun getting in and around there but the location itself had been sterilized to the point that it was kinda boring so I didn't post any photos. I didn't even find the eyeball art posted above.

While I was there I didn't get the sense that it was about to be torn down. I expected it to sit there for more years.
