| | | July 28: Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum for Photographers < on 7/13/2012 8:20 PM >
| | | The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was constructed between 1858 and 1881 in Weston, West Virginia, and is the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in North America. It is a Kirkbride, and housed 250 patients when it initially opened – peaking at 2,400 by the 1950s. The hospital closed in 1994 after suffering for years due to overcrowding and generally deteriorating conditions.
- But on July 28th, a special Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum Tour for Photographers will be held from 8 AM to 12 PM, and from 2 PM to 6 PM. It is an eight hour event to capture both morning and evening light.
- The price for the event is $190.50 per person. Pre-payment is required.
- Registration ends on July 24 at 11:30 PM EST. Register early - the event is expected to be sold out quickly.
- The location of the event is 71 South Asylum Drive, Weston, West Virginia.

Not a tour where they hand-hold you and where you can snap photos at their discretion. They open up sections of the structures, then you are free to wander around. The money is used to rehabilitate the building, much like the other tours that I've coordinated. With the Lonaconing Mill, Ohio State Pen and others, the money is used to shore up or replace the roof, construct new plumbing or interior gutters, restore rooms, maintain the existing structure and so forth. It's an event not really intended for typical tourists - more for photographers. The last event was $75 for 4 hours, which is reasonable. This event is just a tad higher than that, but it is a much larger layout. I also gave a cap of 20 instead of something higher, which increases the cost slightly. | | | This does sound interesting. Cost is my issue as well. A bunch of unexpected costs came up recently that make this tough.

| | | NOTICE Due to a scheduling conflict that just came up, we are only able to do a four hour morning photograph session. This still covers the same area as before, but it will encompass: Kirkbride Medical Center Geriatric building Exteriors of all buildings Grounds The new price is $132.50, which includes tax. http://abandoned_weston.eventbrite.com/

| | | ill be at the tour on 9/23 - did it last august and it was worth every penny of the $150 they charged for EIGHT hours of uninterrupted shooting/wandering the halls of this historic place and anyone who thinks it wouldnt be worth it should go and see the place for themselves... | | | I unfortunately do not set the prices - that's just what they quoted me for the four and eight hour events. I think the price increased because I placed a cap of no more than 20 for the event. There is nothing worse than having 75 photographers in such a small area (as I found out in a similar situation). How many were on your last tour? | | | Perhaps the price has increased or is increasing for the events in the future that have not already had the event posted. Usually, the events that I've put together are $75/4 hours, which is reasonable. This is the first time that I've had something go over $100/4 hours - except for a psych hospital in New York that wanted MUCH more and had some awful licensing agreement (e.g. they own your photos).

| | | just looking at the TALA website - i dont see any increase in the pricing...its the same as it was last year. --------------------------- Photography Tour ( 07/21*, 07/22, 09/23) The photography tours allow you entry to the interiors of the Kirkbride, the Medical Center, Geriatric building, exteriors of all buildings, and the grounds. These will be a semi guided tours without historic information. Check in for the photography tour is ½ hour before the start time. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Morning Photo Tour - $100 (8:00 am to 12:00 pm) Evening Photo Tour - $100 (2:00 pm to 6:00 pm) Both - $150 *07/21 Photographic tour is a night tour. 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 am and there will be no paranormal investigation allowed --------------------------- also - their event calendar shows THIS for 7/28... 07/28/2012 Ghost Hunt 9:00 pm to 5:00 am - 8:30 pm check in
also - you mentioned that you set the cap at 20 people...however, TALA sets the cap at 15 for each session of the photography tours. im a little confused by your thread honestly. where did you come up with the date/pricing and number of people allowed to attend??

| | | Date was my choice, set about a month ago but their customer service/call back leaves a bit to be desired (only got a "confirm" on the date last week), and the price was set by them. As for the number of people - that was my choice. Knowing this would be a bit more confined than the prison or mill, I set a cap at 20, which should result in lower prices.

| | | i agree - if you can secure 20 people they should give you some kind of price break... the best way to communicate with them seems to be through email. they have been more than helpful with me. last year the secretary offered to drive me from weston to clarksburg to pick up a rental car and also said i could spend the night at her house if i needed to since the tour ended at 6 and i was heading for philly that night! since i traveled the farthest for that particular tour she said they would help me in any way they could. fortunately i ended up having it all sorted out by the time i arrived! at any rate - enjoy the tour! when i went i slid away from the group and during the two hour break between sessions i went up to the 4th floor of the kirk and had the whole place to myself for a couple of hours

Actually got an answer on this one (after talking today to them). It's different for the public and private tours - the guides they have for the public events are set before the start of a new year, and the guides are not full time employees. So they have to call off work, take vacation, and so forth - so there is a slightly higher compensation rate based on that.

Definitely more for photographers as opposed to a typical explorer. Great photo opportunity - but paying to go places does take it more to the tourist side of things than the explorer side of things.

| | | Awesome event! This needs to be done in more places, too many great sites are being demolished as they fall into disrepair. If I didn't live really far away I would have considered shelling out the cash to go.
