I went there awhile ago via canoe in broad daylight. I don't really recommend it. I got to the outside of it, made use of the photo op, then got the hell out of there because it smelled disgusting. If you plan on canoeing, the current is too strong to paddle against once you make it up the river to the island, so you have to portage across the island (carry the canoe). Wear pants because the island is covered in poison ivy. Make your way to the part of the island closest to the falls, then go perpendicular to the current (at a 90 degree angle, for those not so mathematically inclined) and your paddling and the current will take you to the door. Watch out for the "whitewater" once you decide to leave the beach with the door. Where you see it, there are rocks beneath the water that will flip your canoe if you aren't careful; the current in that area is quite strong. There is also a ridge of stones (think sandbar, but with stones) as you approach the north side of the island as you're leaving. It gave me some trouble.

I wish I saw this before today...failed attempt to get there from the south by kayak this morning. Nothing like a few cops to spoil a good time, even if they had to call the deputy chief of police to figure out what if anything to charge us with (the answer being nothing, as we had not yet committed anything). But still, I didn't know it was all for being SECOND into that door...

That sucks that the popo got to you.

And no, I didn't go in. As I said earlier, it smelled absolutely terrible.

Also, anyone know how I can move these images into the gallery? When I try to add an album, it says "Sorry, but you do not have sufficient access rights to edit this location."

It didn't suck that badly, as once they figured out we were trying to get into the Door, they wanted to help any way they could...

And you can't add photos to a gallery until you're a full member, there's no way around that one. Sorry.
