I have sunk into the mire of the deep, where there is no foothold.

Fire At Allandale Station
Posted By STAFF
Posted 16 hours ago

A fire broke out Sunday night around 10 p.m. in a portion of the old Allandale train station near Barrie's waterfront. A neighbour said he could see flames shooting 10 to 15 feet in the air.
Several fire crews were on scene to battle the blaze, however, details at this time are scarce.

Copied from the Barrie Advance:

Barrie Police officers are looking for two people suspected in setting fire to the abandoned Allandale CN train station Sunday night.

Sgt. Robert Allan said police believe suspects used a stack of papers or magazines in three separate places outside one of the buildings and then set them on fire.

“It wasn’t sophisticated. There was minimal damage outside the building, but the fire made its way inside and did significant damage,” said Allan.

Police don’t have any descriptions of the suspects, but said two people were seen running away from the area towards Gowan Street that night.
Allan said the middle building was significantly damaged – the only one of three that was on fire – and it appears structurally sound, but a city engineer will have to make that final determination.

Deputy Fire Chief Rick Monkman said he is proud his team was able to aggressively fight the fire that started to consume the old building Sunday night. He said several calls came in just after 10 p.m., possibly from motorists driving by the Lakeshore Avenue site.

“We had five trucks on the scene, around 20 firefighters. Flames were above the roof and heavy, black smoke was starting to cross Lakeshore,” said Monkman.

He said the fire was rapidly intensifying due to the amount of wood in the building, and the fact that it is old and dry.
“We’re lucky to have the buildings still standing. If our guys didn’t get control as fast as they did, we’d have three buildings on the ground now.”

He said the fire went up to the attic and crews were lucky to have the fire contained to just the one building. The fire was under control within an hour but crews were there for several more dousing the hot spots in the building. A crew was stationed there overnight to protect the building if fire started up again.

Given the historical value of the building, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office was called to help with the investigation, but it was turned back over to Barrie Police investigators Monday afternoon.

The buildings were vacant but boarded up, and a security company routinely checked the site for trespassers. Any person with tips on the fire is asked to call Barrie Police Det. Const. Yen at 725-7025 ext. 2125.
