Historically, the Peninsular Paper Company manufactured newsprint, first from rags, and later from wood pulp. They supplied the Chicago Tribune around the turn of the century.
Later, starting I believe in the 1960s, they retooled the plant to make specialty "fine" papers, after they were bought out by James River and then Curtis.
I'm afraid I don't know much more than that insofar as their processes. In 2001 the mill stopped production, and in 2002 or 2003 they sold their fourdrinier line (to whom I don't know, but would love to find out), thus the large empty room in the photos.
